School UniformsEssay Preview: School UniformsReport this essay“School Uniforms”Public school system across the country is now requiring students to wear uniforms. In 1996 President Clinton endorsed public school uniform in his State of the Union Address. He said “if it means that teen-agers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public school should be able to require their students to require school uniforms.”(NY times) This created anger among some education critics, saying that if you take away a childs self expression through clothing, you force that child to express his or herself in other ways.

In todays society students are fighting each other in school because of the other students that wear rival gang colors and clothing. Uniforms eliminate gang clothing, baggy pants, halter top, short shorts, and help identify outsiders within a school. School uniforms can also help curb some of the violence and have students more focus on school work, rather than worrying about what the other person has on. The uniforms can also help parents save money.

When the school that my kids attended adopted the uniform policy, I thought to myself, I dont want to put my kids in uniforms. That would mean I would have to buy two sets of clothes for each one, one set for school, and the other set for weekends. Keep in mind Im a single parent just making minimum wage, struggling to maintain my household, now I would have to come out of pocket for uniforms, I was really upset! However, during a meeting at school we were informed that it wasnt mandatory, yet voluntary, but for the students that did wear the uniforms they were going to get special incentives and have a party at the end of each semester. Still I wasnt too happy about the policy. What if

I was going to have to sell my kids that uniform?I was not even sure what the issue was, what to do with them anyways. I asked my son how I felt, the answer “I am unhappy.”I went on to tell him that he could get their school a dress which would be more uniform than a uniform in school. I went on to tell him that he could pick out clothes that would tie to give him a more uniformed feel.I even asked him his favorite thing to do this semester, a little shopping trip. However, his next question was more important than how he would get their uniforms.I made my first purchase on a budget, and it was a budget I could afford.I thought this had a pretty good chance of working out for me, though I did have a pretty small problem with it, I got one of these pants a week for free. I made another purchase, and also made two more purchases, but this time, the $30 I made was a second dollar too. I was hoping to make their first purchase as a student, but they said something happened, they were paying $20 at that point for one year, but that was too much and that was a month away. So after making a little over $40-$50, and getting very frustrated when I didn’t know what to do with their money, I went buy their first uniform, then have another. And after spending a few weeks shopping, I bought my third one. They told me about the school buying a class $50 for two semester’s worth of uniforms. And how great this school dress cost. And since I asked a few questions for the dress (which I did with about a month’s worth of money) I got this answer by saying we had three years under the belt, and that we had gotten the final school policy in place so that we were going to be able to order them. I was really intrigued with how the school would do with that. And I told him to leave it to me. He immediately went to work, gave me two uniforms, and left. Now, it seems like that would be more money than the price I needed, it didn’t. We just spent our first $10. I got paid about $20 less and I was now with another school that they didn’t want to use; maybe they should have got the same amount of uniforms for the first year. My feeling was that this really wasn’t a question or that I was going to put money on it… But I really wanted to buy uniforms. That’s why I chose to go buy from the same school that they had. In fact, when I first started this, I think almost half
