The following appeared as part of an article in the education section of a Waymarsh city newspaper: “Throughout the last two decades, those who earned graduate degrees found it very difficult to get jobs teaching their academic specialties at the college level. Those with graduate degrees from Waymarsh University had an especially hard time finding such jobs. But better times are coming in the next decade for all academic job seekers, including those from Waymarsh. Demographic trends indicate that an increasing number of people will be reaching college age over the next 10 years; consequently, we can. expect that the job market will improve dramatically for people seeking college-level teaching positions in their fields.” In the article the author concluded that, the difficult finding academic specialties job situation will be better for the next ten years. He gives out the reason that, there will be increasing number of people reaching college age so the more teaching positions will be available in their fields. Although the idea sounds persuasive, the argument suffers from several flaws.First, the author concluded that increasing number of people will be reaching college age over the next 10 years. However, we cannot say that the people who reach the college age will go to the college. Hence, the number of students enrolled into the college probably won’t increase. For example, more and more students cannot determine what majors they want to study, or they want to earn some society experience first, so they choose to delay the regular study schedule or decide do not enter college. Thus, author cannot contribute the increasing number of people to increasing students into the college.

Second, author further guaranteed that graduate students cannot find the teaching jobs because of the job market situation. By citing this, the author attempted to mislead us believe that the worker supply is over the demand, and there are rare teaching job positions. However, the assumption could be undermined if the job seeking students themselves cannot reach the job requirements. For example, the job requires the employee has at least five or more years full-time working experiences in the related field. But those graduate degree students almost have none full-time experience. Thus, the job market probably has a lot of available open positions but the direct graduate student cannot meet the requirements. Third, even if the two factors mentioned above are clarified, there is also alternative concern. The university has more enrolled student doesn’t mean it will hire more teaching facilities. The college need to consider about the cost of hiring teaching positions and the revenue of the school. The college will expand the number of students in each class but still remain the same number of teachers in the school. Therefore, even if more students enroll into the college, the college still doesn’t hire teacher anymore. In conclusion, the argument is far from convincing based on the current content and structure. To better evaluate the argument the author should provide more detailed information about the reasons behind students cannot find the suitable jobs and the university future policy. 20. The following appeared in an article in a health and fitness magazine: “Laboratory studies show that Saluda Natural Spring Water contains several of the minerals necessary for good health and that it is completely free of bacteria. Residents of Saluda, the small town where the water is bottled, are hospitalized less frequently than the national average. Even though Saluda Natural Spring Water may seem expensive, drinking it instead of tap water is a wise investment in good health.”
