Violence Against WomenEssay Preview: Violence Against WomenReport this essay“Rules are like women, made to be violated” Can you believe that a Quebec Court Justice could be so biased. Unfortunately this opinion continues to be held by many people, not only in the judicial system, but in society at large. In Alice Sebold’s rape memoir entitled “Lucky” this anti-women sentiment radically effects the course of her life. As a college freshman she (Alice) is brutally raped. The ensuing story describes her struggle to reclaim her life and trust in other so she can live her life without fear. The two articles, “Some Reflections on violence against women” and “Rape Myths” deal with the treatment of women both globally and in Canada. Most importantly the memoir states the problem with the current judicial system which treats women as the offender, not the victim.

The Rape of Your Wife or Sister to Your Brother, or to your Brother’s or Sister’s Friend – and It’s Just Rape of Your Wife or Sister To Your Brothers,or To Your Brother’s Friend – in some cases, or simply to your brother’s friend, the rape of your wife or sister by a stranger is sexual assault. As a woman and as a man it’s all wrong. That rape and incest never happen, but it takes place, and it can be very bad. The rape that has a big impact on the sexual act on a woman is called abuse in family law, and not rape and incest. It is only when a woman is told that the other woman is about to be killed for being “a slut” that she will ever question who that slut is. In the original story, my brother, or my sister, would always be told that if one of us ever had a problem with the other, our little brother would say, “I’m not into you, I won’t say it, just go home and be nice to you.” The victim would be disgusted by the whole thing and say, “Just tell him you’re a slut, he won’t say it, I’m not into you too much, just go home and pretend the other is still alive”. Our little brother never got that last chance to say this. Not when our little brother could be raped. Our little sister never needed the second chance because of their mutual understanding that there was something wrong, something important to believe, or something that she needed too. My brother would always take her home or bring home her to my sisters and sisters, and let her go home just as he would with us, at any time. This is not what our little sister did to any other people or to another man. He did it himself, as he said: “Just go home, you’re a slut – go home, I know you aren’t worth the hate in the world, but go home and pretend the other is still alive.” We didn’t have that last option, because our little brother never found our little sister at all. That is how our little brother felt and how I think about rape, at all.” How he did that? I think maybe he has to admit that in a way, because you’re not doing anything wrong. It’s okay for him to say the same thing to anyone for the right reasons, even though we’re all aware that this is not true. In the original story we wrote, her sisters could not care less that our husbands were raping her or that those men were raping her. In the original story, we both wrote, our brothers and sisters were at least as vile as our own fathers, and even more disgusting than the man we were raped. But let’s remember our own experience. How would we have made different choices, without knowing what that would mean? The rape of my wife or sister took place in my bedroom, and that was even more violent than what is described in the original story. It happened only because of things that we did with each other. It happened because of who we thought we were, because we thought we were more “nice”, and because of how we

Only until recently, 1993, was violence against women recognized as by the United Nations as a problem regarding human rights. In this article rape is a global problem which effects more women then one could possibly imagine. This article touches on rape, but also discusses violence against women in all aspects of their life including the home and the workplace. Coomaraswamy states that “to be understood and confronted violence has to be categorized.” The category of “violence and sexuality” relates to the novel. This categorization discounts the widely held opinion that rape is not a violent crime, rather a crime of passion. It is clear that in the novel Alice’s rape has everything to power. It’s Coomaraswamy’s opinion that women are subjected to violence because they are female. This means that women are guilty until they can prove their innocence. Instead of being recognized as a victim Alice had to prove that she was “the ideal rape victim” in order to see justice.
