Different, not ordinary or not alike. In the books The Giver and The Catcher in Rye both characters had to face being different. Holden from The Catcher in Rye is different in the way meaning he has mental problems and cant really function in the right way or focus. But Jonas from the The Giver is different in entirely different way. Jonas has a different mind then the rest of the people in the community. He is basically a very gifted and special kid who was blessed with a mind like no other. He could do and see things that only one other person could. In The Giver and The Catcher in Rye Holden and Jonas go trough many stages such as alienation from the adult world, alienation trough self-destructive actions, and trough having special gifts.

Holden Caulfield and Jonas reveal their alienation from society through the adult world. Both Holden and Jonas demonstrate separation from the adult world but in there own unique ways. Holden expresses his disconnection from the adult world in different ways. One example is, when Holden is lonely and depressed he usually decides to try to run away from his problems and does stupid things. Rather than facing his problems. Also Holden is mental so he technically is kind of crazy and he never listens to people and does what he wants. However on the other hand Jonas shows his part from the adult world in a whole other way. Jonas is separated from the adult world because he can never see the adult world. Jonas is the receiver, which means he can see things that no one else in the community can see. Jonas is also not aloud to take about what happens in the lessons he has with the “Giver”(the old receiver). In other words I think Holden Caulfield and Jonas are not close to the society and it affects their growth of becoming an adult.

Holden Caulfield and Jonas reveal their alienation from society through a set of self destructive actions. Both Holden and Jonas isolate themselves from the community but in different ways. Caulfield exposes his separation from the society in many ways. For example, Holden is always lonely and depress. Also when he is lonely he would usually go and do something stupid. But when he realizes what he had done he has nobody to turn to because he has parted him self from the community. However on the other Jonas, expresses his alienation from society through a whole different way. Unlike Holden people know that Jonas is different. They know that Jonas has the ability to have memories, thoughts and can see things in color, but the rest of the community cannot. For example, in the begging of the book there was a meeting and it announced that Jonas was a receiver which is very rare. Another example is he gives the things he learns to a little boy. So I think that even though both Holden Caulfield and Jonas isolate them selves from the community they do it many different ways that affect the people around them.
