My article is about Robust Product Design through Design of Experiments. Robust design can be achieved through different steps. A robust product can work regardless of the variation in its manufacturing process. One of the ways that the designer needs to understand the sources of variation so that they can take steps in order to desensitize the product. Another way is that they can use “brute force” technique which uses added design margin or tighter tolerances. They can also use “intelligent design” By understanding the product and knowing what is critical to achieve the performance characteristic and minimize variation. The operation of the product can be mathematically related to the product or process design parameter the optimal product and process design parameters can aid in determining the optimum parameter values in order to design a more robust design. “The design of an experiment is based on the objective of desensitizing a products performance characteristic to variation in product design parameters.”

The design process can be broke down into three segments. The first is system design that establishes the functionality of the product, the physical product envelope, and general specifications. The second stage is parameter design, which establishes specific values for design parameters related to the physical and functional specifications. It is in the first two stages that the designer can reduce the greatest product cost by creating an effective functional design. The third stage is tolerance design to establish the acceptable tolerances around each parameter. The third stage is where most of the product cost is added in order to meet compliance. Because the company is not able to inspect each product individually it is important that the company focuses on minimizing variability in the product through process design and control of processes. But not all variability is controllable. “Products
