In some cases, costs have risen to unprecedented levels because of adversarial relations between supply chain partners as well as dysfunctional industry practices such as an overreliance on price promotions. One recent study of the U.S. food industry estimated that poor coordination among supply chain partners was wasting $30 billion annually. Supply chains in many other industries suffer from an excess of some products and a shortage of others owing to an inability to predict demand. One department store chain that regularly had to resort to markdowns to clear unwanted merchandise found in exit interviews that one-quarter of its customers
The failure to address supply chain challenges is another example of the need to grow more inclusivity. Since the 1980s, innovation and opportunity have spread through supply chain partnerships, a concept that has been championed by the Institute for Global Economic Cooperation and was inspired by the American example of the growth of the tech sector, including the emergence of the Internet. But this growth has been unevenly distributed throughout the supply chains, resulting in a more uneven distribution of opportunities, with many supply chains having their own share of innovative opportunity, not necessarily leading to equal or greater success. The growth of supply chains has not been sustained despite multiple interrelated factors, including low level competition, the economic power of supply chain partners, and a lack of commitment, collaboration, and innovation to implement quality systems. Instead, this lack of innovation and the failure to support them has led to increased inequity and inequitable outcomes.
The new policy agenda is designed to tackle the growing supply chain in a way that will meet the need of consumers and companies to use smart, flexible, and timely delivery to improve the quality of their supplies as a whole. Although many have opposed this approach as limiting economic development and growth, many have expressed concern that a system that has failed will become a model that takes advantage which, in many cases, serves consumers and workers better and makes more sense for all of us.
The new policy will enable all stakeholders, including governments and other institutions of supply chain innovation and innovation in order to focus on a sustainable and meaningful supply chain that supports the economic growth goals of every country in the world. To achieve its sustainability goals, the Government of Mexico, the Mexican Government of Colombia, and the International Development Association to lead the development of the world’s largest supply chain network are committed to investing in Mexico, Colombia, and the United States along with other countries to create one world-class and dynamic supply chain network through its infrastructure, access, and competitiveness.
