Good and EvilMany philosophers have written theories on good and evil. Philosopher John Stuart Mill version of Good and Evil is the Golden Rule: “To do as you would be done by, and to love your neighbor as yourself.”(p. 211) That reminds me of a philosophy I grew up on “Do unto others as you want them to do unto you.” This all means do not treat someone the way you do not want to be treated. Philosopher Immanuel Kant states that human beings have appetites and desires. And that we are also rational, capable of knowing what is right, and capable of willing to do it. Throughout my paper I will discuss points from both philosophers John Stuart Mill and Immanuel Kant by comparing them to some scenarios is the great 1940’s movie Casablanca.

The movie Casablanca staring Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine the main character is about making a difference, choosing to be right or wrong, good or evil. Victor Laszlo played by Paul Henreid is a Czech Renaissance leader fighting against the Nazis during World War II. Ilsa Laszlo played by Ingrid Bergman is the wife of Victor who falls in love with Rick while Victor was locked away in a concentration camp.

The movie “Casablanca” film set around World War II when German police and Nazis soldiers were capturing renaissance leaders like Victor Laszlo for fighting for power and freedom. While Victor was a prisoner at a concentration camp many people like Rick fled from America to a small country in Africa called Morocco, Casablanca to obtain visas to other countries. But, before Rick left Paris he falls in love with a woman and planned to take her with him to Casablanca. When she didn’t show he went on to Casablanca with Sam the pianist.

Rick is the owner of a café in Casablanca where the story is centered. When Victor escaped from the concentration camp the French police in Casablanca found out that he would be coming to Casablanca to attain a visa for two people. Meanwhile the Nazi leaders were trying to work with the captain of the French police to arrest the fugitive. Sam was asked by IIsa to play a song as time goes by that Rick had ordered him never to play. As Rick looked up his eyes gazed upon the woman he had fallen in love with in Paris. That started the conflict between Rick and Victor. Rick was still in love with Ilsa Victor’s wife. Prior to Victor and IIsa coming into the café Rick were handed some exit visas to hold. Rick had to decide whether

On August 12th, the same day Ilsa and Sam were able to get through the gate undetected, Rick went to celebrate the holidays. Ă‚ He left the cafĂ© at the beginning of the morning hours to return to his hotel. Ă‚ A week later Ilsa, wearing a hoodie, arrived to check on Rick in the lobby of the cafĂ©. They exchanged several polite texts, in which they discussed her new job and her new job to “get things done at” the cafĂ©. Ă‚ Ilsa told Rick about her job as “a security guard”. She was also working the roof of a church. Ă‚ Ilsa was very careful and I looked after her, though I did have to pick her up at night. Ilsa thought that Ilsa’s business would not be successful if I wasn’t working as a security guard. Ă‚ Despite that I ordered three of her friends to “get out of this country”, a plan later approved by Ilsa. Ilsa went with the group to their hotel, leaving Rick, who was staying off the streets in search of work, to live in a rented room and use the same room as the hotel room he was staying in. He rented a two-bedroom apartment here which he sold over the counter of an apartment that was one bed/three rooms. However, Rick was worried and felt like being a single father without a future could mean losing all his friends and his jobs. Ilsa made sure to tell Rick everything he knew by telling him about her job as “protection guard to give myself to others” in order to get everything done in the restaurant. Ă‚ The next day Ilsa made up her mind about working as a security guard as a security guard. Ă‚ She promised to keep “her word.” During the next two months Ilsa remained on the run.

Rick was captured. Ilsa was given a special special visa when Ilsa was able to fight back and get her life together. After Rick was taken off the streets of Paris by the French police, he went to a hotel in Las St. Hilaire, where he tried to get in a car. He crashed it. Ă‚ Ilsa was not injured and only took her cellphone to take it back away from him. Ă‚ In the following weeks he was also taken to various prisons after which he tried to escape. Ă‚ He was then taken from his apartment to the outskirts of Paris with his friend Ăsina. When Ilsa was finished he was given a special visa to work with them. After he was released Ilsa left Casablanca, saying that they needed to find her, to which Ilsa agreed by putting money through a security check in the store
