Mandate of the Department
Revenue Department is one of the oldest administrative Departments of the Government of Assam having been in existence even before 1874. The Secretariat then consisted of only three Departments (1) General Department, (2) Judicial Department and (3) Revenue Department with just one Secretary reporting to the Chief Commissioner.

The Revenue Department at that time dealt with diverse subjects such as Forest, Immigration and Labour, Finance, Commerce, economic products like Silk, Indigo, Tea, Excise and Registration, Survey and Settlement, Agriculture, Veterinary, Irrigation and Canals, Co-operative Credit, Fisheries, Weights and Measures, Archaeology and Museum, Courts of Wards, Mines and Minerals, Famine and Flood Relief, Debt Cancellation Board etc. Later, owing to the growth of activities several new Departments were created like Finance in 1903, Agriculture in 1907 and Forest in 1937.

In the late 1930s, the Revenue Department was divided into two separate branches (1) Revenue General and (2) Revenue Settlement. The Revenue Department in its present form came into existence in the year 1956 when the Department was reorganized into four major branches namely, (1) General Branch, (2) Settlement Branch, (3) Land Acquisition and Land Records Branch and (4) Land Reforms Branch.

Activities of the Department
Reorganization of Lots : Under this scheme several Mondals Lots were created for effective revenue administration. The posts under this scheme were normalized in the year 2002-2003.

Up-gradation of Assam Survey School: In order to upgrade the Assam Survey and Settlement Training Centre (Old Survey School), a few posts were created under the Plan side. The posts have since been normalized in the year 2003-2004.

Cadastral Survey in Jonai, Dhemaji and Sadiya: This scheme is on the verge of completion. The survey works have been completed and now the preparation of records is going on.

Char survey is going on side by side along with the settlement operation in the districts of Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Barpeta, Darrang and Sonitpur. The posts under this scheme have also been normalised.

Implementation of Chapter X of Assam Land and Revenue Regulation. This Chapter of Assam Land and Revenue Regulation relates to protection of backwards classes of people including tribal people. The Chapter provides safeguards to the specified categories of people. Under this scheme at present there are 7 posts of Extra Assistant Commissioner and five posts of Additional Deputy Commissioner Chapter X along with other staff. All these posts, except one post of Extra Assistant Commissioner, have since been normalized.
