Other names for ethanol are ethyl alcohol, drinking alcohol, and grain alcohol. It can also be made from trees, grasses, woods, and plant waste. It is a colourless, flammable liquid that is categorized under bio-fuel. Brazil is the largest suppler and consumer of ethanol in the world. Ethanol functions in the same way as gasoline. In vehicles, it is blended with conventional gasoline to make gasohol (90% gasoline and 10% ethanol). It is clean-burning and consists of high energy.

Ethanol (CoH5OH) is a product of the natural formation of glucose, the fatty acid which is required within the body for production of vitamins, enzymes, and hormones. It is metabolised in two ways. First it is converted with alcohol (C1H2O) and then into a synthetic oil called ethanol. At the same time the synthetic oil becomes saturated with sugars. At concentrations of 400 ppm, the synthetic oil increases in the blood and causes the death of the target organism at the time of fermentation and degrades. When the metabolized ethanol is consumed (with a few drinks being consumed) the amount of glucose that is converted to C1H2O is raised in the body: when it is consumed a large amount of glucose can be produced into high levels of C1H2O. C1H2O has also been shown to cause muscle loss in rats.

Some consumers are less inclined to consume alcohol if they know the flavor: by consuming a small amount of ethanol per kilogram of body weight you get some taste for what ethanol will do to our food and the world around us. Ethanol was first described in 1819 and was often used in the early days of industrial farming. Many people began to drink the alcohol in the early 1800s due to its energy-efficient efficiency and for its very short shelf life. Ethanol has a long and healthy lifespan: until the 1960s, it was used as a fuel source. Ethanol is now used in household cooking, drinking, brewing, heating energy, and water storage systems. It has been used for more than half a century as a fuel, and can also be used in heating oil, gas, and other renewable energies.

Research on the use of ethanol for fuel has shown positive results: for example ethanol has been found to have a significant positive influence on the body’s growth hormone receptor system: it improves insulin sensitivity, increases fatty acid intake, and decreases inflammation (e.g., by blocking cancer by activating pancreatic β-cells and suppressing inflammation in adipose tissue, for example). The same study found that ethanol had a significant effect on heart rate variability in rats, though the effect did not reach statistical significance.

The use of ethanol has brought lots of advantages to the society. A benefit of it is that it is renewable. It has a higher energy density than some other alternative fuels. This means that less volume is required to travel the same distance. Secondly, ethanol decreases the emissions of the toxic ozone-forming compounds. For example, tailpipe emission of carbon monoxide from vehicles can be reduced by preferring ethanol over gasoline. Since ethanol is made from plants, it improves the agricultural economies by providing a stable market for a certain crops.

Although ethanol has positive impacts on our countries, few disadvantages are found in researches. First of all, the cost of ethanol is quite high. In the year of 1987, it cost 2.5 to 3.75 times as much as gasoline. As it is stated above, ethanol has a high energy density, so it needs 1.5 times as much as gasoline to go the same distance. Also, large amount of land is required to crops and the conversion of plants to ethanol is very inefficient because of the large water contents in plants.
