Reaction Paper: The Firm (1993)I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to be in Mitch’s position. Although I do believe he was to blame for some parts, especially when he cheated on his wife or when he was tempted by how high he can charge for his service. Choosing between going to jail by not leaving or having your license removed in order to help the FBI was a tough choice. But if given that choice, I probably would have chosen the same. I would rather have my license removed and my conscience free of guilt instead of rotting in jail for who knows how long while knowing I could have done something to prevent that. But after having to choose from the two options, Mitch was then faced with the dilemma of how to get past the strict confidentiality between a lawyer and his client. In order to help the FBI, he had to disclose private information regarding his clients, and that was a big no-no in the world of lawyers. Fortunately, Mitch found a loophole. He discovered that the firm was overbilling the clients, which is another big no-no, especially if it involved huge amounts of cash. He then “worked” with the Mafia to expose the firm. Mitch collected the information throughout the illegal activity, and then submitted it to the FBI, hence catching the firm red-handed. I do not really know how the law worked in the US or how different it was from here in our country, so I am not really sure if what he did was legal or allowed. Anyway, it was a pretty happy ending for Mitch. He got the money, his brother was free, he was able to escape punishment, and he was able to keep his wife, too.
