The era in which Queen Victoria reigned Britain, 20 June 1837 till her death on 22 January 1901, was a crucial period in Britains history due to the flourishing of wealth, power and culture. In this time period, the industrial revolution played a dominating part in changing the society. The industrial revolution did not only change the economic standards, but also had an impact in causing development in almost every sphere of the British Empire. Various elements from the Victorian age still have major impacts on our way of life today.

During the 19th century there were rapid changes in Britain. Things were changing evolutionary as well as revolutionary. The British Empire was a leading nation in many fields. The leading reason why Britain was so successful was because of the impact of the industrial revolution. When there would be changes in one place, it would lead to changes in another place. This was obvious in Britains growing economy and the demand from their colonies, and the expansion of the colonies.

Britains material progress was taking its turn, and wares all over the world, would most likely have been made in The British Empire. Britain was the workshop of the world. The accomplishment of their material industry was linked to the fact that the scientific and technological knowledge was spreading and growing rapidly throughout the nation. However for this to happen, their also had to be a change in society.

The British Empire was a constantly growing nation. The population was growing at a high rate. This was mostly due to the medical evolution as well as improved working conditions leading to a significant increase in the average life expectancy. In Queen Victorias reign, her nation wasnt only one of the most leading ones, it also had one of the fastest growing capitals “London”. The capital was exposed to massive incensement in population, this was mainly caused by the urbanization. People from the country were flocking into towns in search of employment, adventure and a better way of life. However, there were downsides to this urbanization. Because the immigration of people happened at such a rapid speed, the supply of jobs could not sustain the high demand of these. This resulted in desperate workers that would take any job available, which allowed the employers to set the wages at a very low level. This wasnt only accounting the adults, but also the children, who were helping their parents financially. These children didnt work under good conditions.

However by the late 19-century the workings condition did however improve as a consequence of the growth in social responsibility. This wasnt the only thing that would change in this particular century, soon peoples fundamental values in life would change.
