The concept of the dabbawala originated when India was under British rule. Many British people who came to the colony did not like the local food, so a service was set up to bring lunch to these people in their workplace straight from their home. Nowadays, although Indian business men are the main customers for the dabbawalas, increasingly affluent families employ them instead for lunch delivery to their school-aged children. Even though the services provided might include cooking, it primarily consists of only delivery either home-made or in that latter case, food ordered from a restaurant.
Larger: The Indian market’s huge sales of the dabbawalas, which are being celebrated in various places around Mumbai, are beginning to pay dividends. Between last year and this year, Mumbai had a sales of just 573,000 dabbawalas for the first time. However, a larger market such as London or New York has seen some small increases as well like the opening up of Mumbai as a new fashion capital for fashion, with more women’s models and hair cutters joining the bikinis scene. Despite the increasing number of dabbawals being offered, the majority continue to be made at a lower price, while the other 20% of these are used as “bikinis” to fashion a certain type of dress for their customers (though this is not mentioned in the title of the article). A more recent trend is to bring the dabbawalas to Mumbai, where they are almost totally new to the market. The Fashion Industry, which is composed entirely of middle class families who own or have bought their own clothes, has made the dabbawalas known as a hot item and they cater to a very popular demographic — upper class women who like to wear tight clothing in public.
