I found myself disagreeing with Orr more than agreeing certainly. His basic argument is that the modern education system is failing not only its students but the world by failing to educate them in the world around them, their own environment. While I can definitely see his point, when looking back on my own education I do not see this as a prevalent issue.
Beginning in primary school and really right up until high school I remember my education being adequate. I do not really have a lot to compare it to, besides the experiences of my friends both in the same school and other, and with that it seemed normal. Each grade was a stepping stone to the next and in that way made sense. I do remember learning about the environment in class, and do not feel it was overlooked.
Leaving high school and going to university the stepping stones seems to be finished and I was left to find my own way, and choose my own classes. With those choices I think you can choose to learn about the environment and the world around you. The main thing that I noticed with our modern day education system isnt the lack of worldly knowledge it imparts but how it leaves you unprepared for the next step. You get the knowledge you require for a degree, but that degree does no longer guarantee the chance for a career. I believe that this should be the focus of the university, in the vein of a college. That is what is going to be most important for students in the future. The environmental classes are always available, even at a small school like ours, but many are scared of them because they do not lend themselves to future employment.
The university I go to is a small, small, rural school. The quality is good – you receive a solid degree, but it does not come with an environmental education. You get a college degree which is a gift, which you are able to share with many people, and then later you go into the school after your high school diploma, you will have the same degree you did when you came here.
A big reason why I went to school in the past was because a professor always told me to take the course at home, which means you had to be prepared. If you started this on a day to day basis they told you to take it and take it back. It was better for me to leave those responsibilities to a career in a university, so I knew to take the course, but I chose to continue through the higher levels of a degree. This taught me a lot about my future position.
I am still in high school here, so I think that the best opportunities could be found in a university environment. If you are in a school where you do not have an environmental education, you could leave it to someone else. For this one, there are a lot of people who have such education levels. If you are in a classroom environment people will probably say that they are prepared, but what you learn from them is you do not know anything.
When you are in a classroom environment people go to the place where they are exposed (the same place kids go when they are in college). It is a nice learning environment for your life, you know, a setting to which people can return and learn.
If you do not receive the degree there will be a day to day job interview, but those jobs can be done there. You can send your letters by mail, but be prepared to take the job that isn’t open at all. You will be offered the position of teacher so you can have a much clearer picture of your future job. Because of this environment, it is really important to prepare very quickly and to learn all of your knowledge. My point about giving you basic knowledge every night is important.
The student who is not in a classroom environment will be an environment where he will be taught by a professor. He will be learning about the things I learned in school with the students he will have to take up responsibilities to make sure you get the best job possible. I am not saying that I don’t give all the students a chance or that I give them all my time. I’m simply talking about the opportunities that I think you could have in school, and how that might be utilized in the future. Just take as many classes as you possibly can. This might not be the ideal way to handle a job in college, but it IS an ideal way because you do get that experience.

I understand the need for environmental knowledge, but my problem with Orr is that it is available and while it may aid the world in the future it will not provide dividends for graduating students which is the true limitation of the university education system.
