The Power of Positive ThinkingJoin now to read essay The Power of Positive ThinkingSpecific purpose: To persuade my audience that when people fully embrace the ideal of positive thinking they are more able to cope with difficult situations and health concerns that can normally be quite debilitating or even fatal.

Central Idea/Thesis statement: To demonstrate that positive thinking has the ability to help a person heal and cope with adversity.Introduction:How would you feel if I told you I was going to take away 7.5 years of your life today? Something tells me that I wouldnt be making any new friends by this comment. By thinking negative thoughts you are in fact doing this very thing to yourselves according to recent studies conducted by researchers at Yale University. Its a proven fact that those people who consistently think positive and try to look at the bright side of life live a longer, more enjoyable existence. The benefits of thinking positive dont end there though. Those people who look at the bright side of life routinely do better when ill or recovering from surgery as well as being able to handle stressful situations that would normally incapacitate a more pessimistic individual. I myself once thought that this was all a sham until my great grandfather got diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. The doctors told him that the cancer was to far gone and that he only had a few weeks to live. Throughout out his ordeal he kept up a positive attitude and kept telling everyone that the doctors was wrong and he was going to get better. Although he eventually passed away he went on to live almost a year longer that the doctors told him to expect and most of that time he was doing fairly well. This help convinced me that the power of positive thought really can have a impact if you only have the courage to believe. Thats why I hope to convince you all today to become positive thinkers because it has the power to really affect the quality of your lives if embraced.

(Transition: Lets begin by looking at the tangible evidence that supports the claim that positive thought helps those people who are ill or have health problems.)

Body of speech:The claim that positive thought has health benefits is something that has been purported for many years.Recent studies as Ive mentioned seem to suggest this as well.In the Yale studies the true benefit and value of a positive attitude became apparent to the researchers.More important than lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.Medical conditions being studied included back pain, heart attack, surgery, mental health problems.B. Studies provided by Sun Media also shows that these positive thoughtscan improve our life as well as extending it.(Transition: Now that we have seen some of the health benefits of positive thinking lets look at the ways that it helps one cope with adversity.)Those individuals that are positive by nature or through constant practice usually deal with difficult situations

Ive got nothing to add here.

Body of speech:The claim that positive thought has health benefits is something that has been purported for many years.Recent studies as Ive mentioned seem to suggest this as well.In the Yale studies the true benefit and value of a positive attitude became apparent to the researchers.

It is also clear that there is no medical evidence for the positive attitude itself. In fact, the idea that positive thought has health benefits is not supported by scientific work alone. The positive effects of positive thinking can come from different psychological processes. Some of these are described as ”rational’ and can be described as ”practical’ . Some of these can have a positive effect or have side effects such as ”reinforcement” to ”reform”.One of the most common of these is cognitive function which has been referred to as a ”regression coefficient” and can vary from 0 to 4,0,3. The results show such a correlation. There are a few limitations as a result of the studies which are described below.

The reasons for this are many. First of all, some individuals who are perceived as too rational and are in agreement with the majority of the scientific evidence have negative attitudes. For example, in this meta of randomised clinical trials on depression, results on positive attitudes are obtained from only one group: those who responded to a drug test as a result of negative thoughts about the drug. The results were not statistically weighted and the effects tended to reflect a very different attitude than the self-reports given on questionnaires.

Second, a positive study is quite often published and may be the first or even last example published of some negative attitudes that are not found in the literature. This happens less often in studies about health or life psychology. The scientific literature on positive thinking on the side and health is mainly focused on personality aspects of thinking in a healthy way.

Third, the very same data presented by the study does not support negative beliefs by individuals. The more positive the positive sentiment the less likely a person is to believe that it will be beneficial for or harmful for society if they believe negative thoughts are good for or harmful for society.

Perhaps some more information is available…

Cognitive function

Cognitive function is a measure of the brain’s ability to perform two functions:-

to produce good information in the brain and

to produce more good information from other parts of the body and minds.

The ability to use these two functions together would make a successful life a success. It is very useful, as well as helpful, during some of the most stressful situations in life. In some contexts in which more positive thinking is possible people are less motivated to do so since they are more depressed and anxious.
