In 1965, Bill Cosby starred in the television program I Spy, becoming one of the first African-American dramatic leads on television. Cosby and his costar, Robert Culp, insisted that there be no racial jokes or themes in the program. They wanted the show to be “color blind” so that Cosbys presence was simply accepted as normal. On the one hand, that was a daring move for the 1960s; but was that a realistic or idealized representation of race relations for 1965–or today?

Many students wont need to use their imaginations for this scenario–popular culture contains few, limited, or mostly stereotypical images of African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and other non-white groups. If you belong to a group that rarely sees a positive likeness of your image in popular culture, would life be different if the opposite were true?

The way popular culture views your particular race or ethnicity may inform how you view popular culture. For your work this week, you will assess the various viewpoints that inform racial stereotypes along with the interplay of racial stereotypes and popular culture.

The Week 2 Final Project area continued the steps you will take toward completing the Final Project. As you did last week, you will submit a short paper documenting your completion of the weeks milestone. The purpose is to ensure that you have established a plan for the Final Project and that you are taking appropriate intermediate steps toward its completion.
