Myspace and Facebook as a Cultural Phenomenon
Myspace and Facebook as a Cultural Phenomenon        Perhaps one of the most life changing inventions in this world is what we call the internet. In just a short time since it first appeared on the scene, it has started to dominate the world. It has helped people find means to communicate, find means to reinvent their businesses, and it has even helped people find entertainment in their own right. With the internet, almost everything is just a click away.         One of the popular areas that the internet has to offer is that of social networking. Social networking is the interaction of individuals who share a common interest or goal. Social networking itself has become a cultural phenomenon in the way that it has affected the lives of many, but there are two major social networking sites who have perhaps defined the words “cultural phenomenon” best.         Myspace.com has risen out of nowhere and became a website for teens and adults. It started out as a simple being of curiosity and now it has become a cultural phenomenon. This website offers games and journals that have proven to be successful. New and emerging bands also use Myspace to promote their music. With as much as 270, 000 people joining everyday, Myspace has definitely proved that it is popular and that it has become a part of many people’s routines.         Facebook, on the other hand, concentrates on applications which became the basis for the people’s relationships to further grow. The thing with Facebook is that it can be used by people of different generations and ages, unlike Friendster, for example, which mostly caters teenagers just looking for relationships.         Facebook and Myspace both have potentials to educate people. In a few seconds, information can be disseminated easily, whether it is personal opinions, current events or movie reviews. In fact, there are studies being conducted to explore the possibility that Facebook might be used as a learning medium.         Facebook and Myspace have also tremendously helped businesses grow and explore new ways to promote their products. The interaction that the internet has provided through these social networking sites is amazing. People can order products at once instead of going to the malls to shop.
