When the north won the war freedom came about. The African Americans
were confused at the situation, one slave even said to its master “I must go,
if I stay here I will never know I am free”. In the time that they were free,
The Africans spent their time looking for husbands, wives, and children
that were sold as slaves before the war. The plans for reconstruction was
necessary to build state government. Yet some questions had to be answered
before these plans began such as “How could the Union make sure that the
rebels would be loyal”? and “How could the newly freed blacks find homes
and jobs”? Before the war the Northern leaders had a quarrel over these
questions. Northerners felt the southerners should be severely punished
because they feel that the war was a crime against America.
The congressman had organized the Freedmans Bureau the purpose was to
help the blacks to find work, food, and a good education.
The Bureau opened offices through out the south. It gave free meals and
medical help to the poor whites or blacks. It also worked as a court which
accused whites of violating the rights of blacks. Some white grocers refused
to sell to the black teachers and landlords would not rent rooms to the them.
But no matter what, the teachers arrived and schools were set up.
In 1867, The Freedmens Bureau began trying to register blacks to vote.
The fourteenth amendment states that all citizens must be treated equally.
This meant that the black codes, which only applied to one race was
unconstitutional. Then in 1869 they created the fifteenth amendment which
states that it is against the law to deny a person a right to vote because of a
race. After that rule, Blanche Bruce was one of the first black members of
Congress and a Senator for Mississippi.
Southern whites hated the reconstruction government. These southerners
were denied the right to vote. They had to pay heavy taxes, or lost their
property as a result of certain reconstruction laws.
Whites resented that African Americans played a role in the government. A
few whites showed their feelings about the blacks taking over. So, they
joined an organization called the “Ku Klux Klan” in the
