I recognize that ability to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a great privilege. My family is a tremendous source of inspiration for me. In a time when financial aid was unavailable, my grandfather worked many different jobs to support himself through college. As a boy, he acquainted me with the struggles he faced to attain an education. His fierce determination was what put him through college and law school. My parents, both victims of divorce, were unable to complete their education at a university. Instead, an unexpected miracle would compel them to find work and fulfill certain responsibilities.

I wish to take some time to reflect and discuss a variety of issues and thoughts related to academic preparation during this article.

I’ve had the opportunity to write this article over the years; but now I have another one coming up, with very specific context of my time in Illinois after studying for 18 years. So this is from my time in college.

• As to how I came into university, I started at a small local library a few years ago, and later moved into a dorm apartment in Chicago. The situation was extremely stressful, but then this experience helped a bit, as I realized that a high level of preparedness does come with a certain ability to cope with challenges. I’ve continued to learn a huge amount over the years, and the challenges of school and college are much more difficult. I would appreciate an explanation as to why I came a different way; please let me know.

2) I’ve always been very anxious after a student’s freshman year, and having recently had an extra year off work, I felt the need to start writing at about the same time as my academic year and college. I decided that I wanted to go a bit longer, and I have come to accept this choice. The first two years I enrolled would take me around two years (I knew in writing my major), but by the time I decided to enroll in a second term I was at a higher level than I had been in my previous two years since my first two admissions. Because of the new semester schedule, I was unable to complete my research, and I wanted to be ready to go right then and there on the first day of my university work semester. As such I began to work on my degree work, as well as my post-secondary training. I spent an average of 20 days a year out of my study for the semester; but during this time I got a chance to try for my thesis work, and to be assigned to an online research lab. During that time I was able to complete all of our research projects and to gain even more confidence in my thesis. While these two tasks did nothing at all for those that could not complete it for their research, I also knew that by the time I graduated and started to participate in the university I had already been paid (in this case by the university), and at this point I had not yet fulfilled the previous criteria of college preparation. I knew that I would not have a good degree after college, and that a degree wasn’t the answer. This led to me to apply for many jobs, particularly for the construction and maintenance of new dorms. These were jobs I hadn’t been paid for until after college, and at that stage I had no choice but to pay extra. That meant I had to borrow money to pay those bills that I owed for my tuition (by the time I had to pay those bills, I was already earning less than $50 a month and therefore had no sense of budgeting). I am enrolled in college so that I might have the opportunity to tread down a path laden with opportunity. Growing up in an educationally diverse family has taught me that education opens doors. All it takes is a little work to earn it.

The factors that contributed my poor academic performance include but are not limited to: procrastination, disorganization, and a lack of prioritization. Often, throughout the semester, I would put off major assignments until I no longer had any time left to do anything of quality. Another contributor to my performance was my lack of organization. Instead of filing my papers and assignments away neatly, they were left in no particular order or place. The last of my errors involved my lack of prioritization. Many times I chose have fun over completing important assignments. Other times, I chose to go to bed late and in turn over sleep. Recognizing these contributors will help prevent any reoccurrences of my recent performance.

I acknowledge that my performance in the last semester was unacceptable. However, I hold it as inaccurate representation of my academic potential. In the next semester, I expect to spend my time more wisely. I will
