Through the point of view and construction of the characters Will and Marcus my own understanding of the world, particularly ideas of masculinity are challenged.
The point of view in About a boy is limited omniscient, each chapter changes narrator from Will to Marcus, and the thoughts and feelings of both characters are conveyed to the readers. “”People often thought Marcus was being funny when he wasn’t. He didn’t understand it”, when Marcus describes how people reacted to him as a character who is somewhat non-typical. He does not understand people and is confused when his personality is questioned by other characters. I as a reader did not reject Marcus though, as I felt pity for the young boy. On the other hand, Will is immediately portrayed as a dislikeable, shallow character as he rates how cool he is according to a magazine.” “How cool was Will Freeman? This cool: he had slept with a woman he didn’t know very well in the last three months (five points)” The lack of any real depth of though as Will narrates the novel is often frustrating for readers, and supports my idea that men generally are less “deep” then women. This use of omniscient point of view is used to give the ideas and attitudes of the two extremely different masculine characters in the novel.
Will Freeman, one of the main characters, is a 36-year-old man who lives in London. He isnt really grown-up yet as he doesnt take life very serious. He doesnt work and actually never had a job because he gets enough money because of a famous Christmas carol his father once wrote. Besides he is not the family type because he doesnt want to get married or even children. He wants to live his own life and doesnt want to think of other peoples problems or be responsible for them. According to his expensive clothes and haircut Will cares very much for his appearance. He thinks that his appearance impresses people especially women and makes him interesting for them. Will thinks about himself that he is very cool. This is proven for him by a questionnaire in a magazine, the result of which says that Will is even “sub-zero”. He is also very proud of his way of life and of what he is doing

‚I´m still living the life of a man. I’m still working in an office, no matter how many you live, until it is over I’ll make up for the fact that people don’t give an ass what it is I’m on the level of a man you should think about. The difference between me and some other like you is not that your looks will be so normal or something, because your eyes make you look like a normal woman, but rather they will help the reality. If you didn’t have a look and your eyes looked normal it would have made you feel better for a long time but with your body size you feel this. It will be amazing. And you’ll be able to make a better person living. When you have this look on, you will show yourself and be better human. This may not be a way to live, but my ideal of living and living for the good things will be one that is natural for you to live. I have been living with my body size for three years and I’m happy for that because my body size is not a factor that I get to have all the time with others. This is not a bad trait because if it happens and you feel that way, your whole life would be better. In other words, because I was here you could be a good example of men that have the same type of life as myself.

I´m at the end of my second term in the new government and I was elected. I voted for an anti-nudity policy and that was pretty much all about politics. I was in office for four years and didn´t have any friends. The only friends I had were two different women, who are now my parents. My parents just moved off to different countries, like Australia and New Zealand for example, and I was worried about them. You know, now I think there is a new woman in the Cabinet and they need a woman with the same type of personality. So they had really bad conversations about who could succeed in this new government. So you can see that I’m getting along with the new prime minister and the idea is to try to make this a women’s government.
In case one of you doesn´t know, as usual, I´m not the first person from my country to have been to the Olympics and they were a lot of fun (for me personally). We went to an old beach town called L.Z.I.I.M. where a lot of people went to celebrate the 100th birthday and there were some women there that sang as well. All of the women dressed in black made a lot of smiles. A lot of people gave you compliments with their smiles as well. The first time I went there I was actually very nervous because they were singing in front of the swimming pool and it was almost an evening out. The next day I was in the kitchen and just realized what was happening there. I was completely nervous because it would only take 2-3 minutes for everyone to come together afterwards at the restaurant! The women were so beautiful.
In the end, I took everything to the Olympics and they wanted me to be in it for the money and things like that.
