Poets have ways of expressing themselves and their work. Polite way is used to convey some the poetic works, yet the message contained is of much importance. These poetic works mostly addressed the people from the generation of silence. Age of Silence refers to individuals given birth to between 1920 and 1940. These people had participation in the war at the time. According to this reading, some responsibilities are evident from the poetic work. In this work, the relationship between the poetic work and the lives of the poets is as discussed below. The poets are depicted as formal. The poet’s formalism is evident in the way they express their concern to the people with technicality. The poets do not take the words the press feed them as they are but focus on the truth. Poets, in this case, can inform the masses of whatever happens in the war zones. The kind of information that only the military have access. Exposing the truth to the masses make poets formal. Poets, in this case, have not been contented with the information they are fed by the media which is not correct, but they aim for the truth. Philip Larkin illustrates formalism of the poets by the way he expresses the response of the people. Phillip Larking describes the shock that struck the people when they got exposed to the truth. .
The poets have been portrayed as sarcastic. This sarcasm is evident in the way that some of the poets described how they felt about their participation in the war. Rupert Brooke describes it that the start of the war introduced the feeling of energy to the people who were previously more concerned with serving their needs. The irony is because participating in war is not fun and should be taken with seriousness as it involves loss of lives. Sarcasm is also evident in Julian Grenfell poetic work. Julian Grenfell states that he has adoration for war. He expresses that war makes him happy. However, Julian did not live long as he got killed in 1915 despite saying his liking for war. The irony is that the poet got to die from what he liked. Thirdly, the poets are portrayed as sensitive. Sensitivity is in the sense that the poets of the war reported honestly of the events that happened. The poets kept the people well informed of what the press did not tell. The poets are said to have fought against the act of lowering the value of the people by limiting the information passed to them. Hemingway illustrates the sensitivity of the poets. Hemingway expresses his reasoning that it is not easy to arrest poets even if they criticize those hiding the truth. Therefore, the poets are free to expose the truth and keep the people up to date with the current affairs. The poets are depicted as people who are always ready to inform the public of the information concerning war as they occur therefore revealing their sensitive nature.
