Employer of Choice
There are many reasons one might prefer one company over another. In many ways, a
person’s employer preference changes depending on their age, maturity, and level of
responsibility. I recall vividly how my own priorities in life shifted dramatically after having
children!
There are many websites and business professionals who claim they know the “key
employer characteristics” that every job seeker should aspire for. These lists are true in a
general way, but each person has his or her own priorities in life. While considering which
items would be present on my own wish list, I realized I had to give the question serious
deliberation.
I assembled a list that mirrors my present needs in my life. The first item on the list is
Work-Life Balance. Over the past 18 years, I have worked for a variety of companies. I no
longer have the desire to reprise my role as a “butt-in- seat” employee who is systematically
micromanaged throughout the week!
The second item on my list is Low-Cost Health Insurance benefits. As a father of 4
children, I have been hit with extremely high premiums and insurance deductibles. In 2015, for
example, I had to pay a $12,500 as a max-out- of-pocket. This seems excessive!
The third item on my list would be Career Development. I desire an organization that
allows for upward growth and a variety of career opportunities.
The fourth item would be Competitive Compensation. At the end of the day, a growing
family needs to growing paycheck!
The fifth item would be feeling trusted, appreciated, and valued! Although making
money is a good thing, it’s not everything. The soul of a business matters. Old-fashioned
gratitude is something that has no monetary value. That’s because it’s priceless! One of the
most overlooked HR facts is that profitability is directly linked to workplace health, benefits,
and demonstrations
