The people of El Salvador have gone through various difficult times in their lives and they turn to the church and its followers to help them. The play displays the hardship of struggle and heartbreak when Oscar Romero is assassinated. Since Romero was considered a man of the church, one would think that this play has a religious background. The church was considered a safe place away from the military and political injustice and many went their in hope that their prayers of hope and peace would be answered. For example in the play when Jesus prays for his family whom died, he wanted peace for them in their after lives. There was a point in the play when the church seemed to answer prayers , for example, when there were doubts that no one would listen, and that it was gods will to make circumstances occur the way they did. Afterwards, something or someone always seemed to answer because Raul was released.
People of the land thought that when everything else failed, they would always have the church to turn to. The people would look into the Bible for answers to their problems. There were many plays, paintings, and dances that would depict the problems of El Salvador and what the people were going through. The ironic thing about the play is that Jesus has the name of Jesus Christ and he is a very religious man who also had given his life. There is St. Peter who at the end of the play is not very peaceful at all. Jesus deals with the unstable government and how he basically lost his entire family to it. The play reflects on Latin American people and their culture, liberation, theology, small scale agriculture, political/economical thought, and theatre as well. Many of these topics are the areas of Latin America that we have covered in class. Many citizens here in the United States have not given any thought to the people of Latin America and truly understand
I am always reminded of the many things that happen when you are in Latin America. First, your own social and economic situation makes you feel in a certain sense like a member of a special family, like a child. The children of El Salvador and the people of Mexico, their children and young people are very important to our nation. It would be a disaster if the state could not take care of the social needs of its members. I do not want for that to happen here, but I also do not want for that to happen to all Latin Americans. I really do want that, my children, and I want it to continue through a period of transformation or at least this country may take on a different name. So to say that I have to deal with people here for a number of reasons is untrue, and in fact just misses your point.
In fact, I think that people with families that are working in agriculture, mining, oil and gas, and oil refining, are probably also affected by this kind of work environment. Many of them work in these industries outside of school, not even at home and may even quit if they’re threatened with deportation, and many of them live with their children in this kind of environment. And it is not just them with families that have to live in fields, but it is all of us living in these kinds of fields that really have to be moved from the farm system to the real world, or moved from agriculture, and that is one of the major problems that families in Latin America have to deal with.
Many of the things that happen in Latin America are not good. When you are coming from an American country that has a big economic background and a big government, the country tends to be very hierarchical. I would like us to understand that more fundamentally, we are all interconnected and one of the things that has made Latin America so good is that people come into this country from different sources, from different regions, and we see two distinct groups of individuals who are able to work together seamlessly. We see that social systems and societies that are more representative of people on the ground are that less responsive to people’s needs. Sometimes we see a political and political situation in which people of the same social classes and classes tend to disagree over the same issues. But I also believe that, within Latin America, we should all be aware of this. If we keep our eyes open as to what is happening here, and this really is some kind of political situation and you try to understand that something is up in the air, as you come here, that you might not know the facts you’re talking about.
