In a recent staff meeting Robert Vallet, CEO of Satellite Systems said, “We are a people company and we are proud of it,” as he boasted about the success of the corporate-wide values system and how the company has come to represent the values of fairness, honesty, and integrity to the customer and to the employees. However, the events leading up to and encompassing the recent staff meeting would suggest otherwise. The commonly held standards at Satellite Systems appear to be disrespect, superiority of others, and a complete lack of pride. With the espoused cultural values of the CEO, Vice President, and managers all differing from each other, Satellite Systems is only hindering the future success of the company.

Respect is a virtue that should run deep within any organization. Examining the staff meeting, the lack of respect at Satellite Systems on everyones part is evident. First, the CEO of the company was twenty minutes late to the meeting. Second, the Vice President of the company admittedly states that he was only half way listening to what was being said, as if he could care less as to what his CEO was saying. Lastly, not only did the Vice President quietly pray for no one to ask a question at the end, the CEOs response to the one question asked, was completely disrespectful and uncalled for.

With Mr. Vallet still new to the firm, he should have arrived early and met with the company as a whole. Doing so would show everyone at the company that he not only respects but acknowledges them and their work for the company. Perhaps if everyone at the company felt as if they had the respect of their superiors, someone such as the Vice President would feel more apt to listen to what the CEO was saying. Despite the reasoning of doing so, no Vice President should choose to take what a companys CEO is saying as minimal. Most importantly however, a company needs to effectively communicate and by praying for no questions to be asked or snidely responding to the ones that are asked, completely shuts down communication. Without proper communication within an organization, problems are bound to occur.

Within any organization people are aware of the hierarchy and where they fall in, however, even with a structured organizational hierarchy, those on top need to realize that those at the bottom play just as an important role. Mr. Vallet fails to realize just that as he was only meeting with the “movers and shakers”, as he referred to the managers. Within any company, those working directly with the clients are the ones who are ultimately increasing revenue and profit margins for said company. Therefore, Mr. Vallet should express more of an interest in meeting with everyone at the company and not solely praising the managers.

As the managers at Satellite Systems receive the praises of their CEO, they all exhibit a false sense of pride. When the CEO mentions the plaque on the wall each manager
