The Morgan Stanley Case
There are several identifying issues on this case. The issue that appears to weigh heavily on the company as a whole and individually was what we call “culture shock”.

Changing the culture in any organization is difficult. As an example is if an employee is used to doing his own thing and now the organization wants more teamwork such in this case, employees usually become resistant to change. This case relates to real life experiences. For example: Have you ever worked with or even know someone that has comes in and do the same thing day in and day out until they are predictable? Now all of a sudden something changes and knows they are upset. This is resistant to change whether it was easier or better than before.

Paul Nasr, Senior Managing Director and Rob Parson, Market Coverage Professional are where most of the issues were centered.
Paul neglected the importance of the “One Firm Firm” theory and chose Rob for his position based on the similar thought process of making financial gain over everything else rather than the new policy. Rob was seen by other co-workers as arrogant, self-centered and possibly self-absorbed. He was definitely not a team player.

Upon Rob being hired, he was all but out-right promised a promotion. Of course Rob in-turn didnt feel that his position or room for advancement would be in jeopardy at any time and took all for granted. Rob continued to show individuality instead of building relationships within the organization. The only collaboration this gentleman did was with clients. Rob was never reprimanded for not adhering to the policy, so co-workers began to imply that he received preferential treatment from Paul.

Paul really didnt provide any guidance for Rob or any other employee. We are in a “lead-by-example” world. With this being said, what Paul should have promised is that change, no matter how difficult, is possible and he should also assess each individuals abilities while encouraging teamwork. This will not only demonstrate individuality and promote teamwork but it also produce a much higher revenue.
