Terror – Personal Belief Essay
I believe terror has and is a huge form of power. “It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both,” stated Machiavelli in his book The Prince, the manual to many monarchs at the time. Many leaders like Stalin, Hitler and Hussein all chose the path of fear to rule, as they sought the complete obedience and respect of their subjects and believed the only way of earning it was through fear inducing terror. However, leaders are not the people who are able to use the powerful tool of fear to mark their importance and influence. Terrorist groups, like Al-Qaeda, are able to influence countries, like the United States, who fear these groups actions. A few months after 9/11, former President Bush’s’ administration created the Department of Homeland Security and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). An immense rate of immigrant deportation increased with 400,000 annually and airport security changed drastically. All these changes were effects of the extremist group’s actions on September 1, the whole world feared their next move, just how the world feels currently with Isis.
