Best Way To Hire PeopleShawntelle Turner (Tucker)ENGPROF/0124 October 2017Noura BadawiBest Way to Hire PeopleAll business owners want their businesses to thrive, grow, and be successful. Who you hire at your company can make a world a difference in making sure that happen. Business owners, managers, and team leads all have something in common and that is hiring people to work at their companies. There are several things one should consider when hiring new people for any company. Some of those things include past experience and the recruit’s personality and how that will gel with the rest of the company but the main thing to consider is cost. All of the things I mentioned involve cost in some way and should be a heavy consideration.Past ExperiencePrior to interviewing anyone, resumes should be reviewed to narrow down whose background makes sense for the company. Sifting through resumes can be a tedious task but searching for key words can eliminate hundreds of resumes. If a key word search hasn’t narrowed down the search enough, looking at a recruit’s education and certifications can narrow down the hunt even more. For example, if a hiring manager in the IT field is looking for a new employee, selecting candidates who have already received the COMPTIA Network+ certification could narrow down the candidates and show who has the background for the job. At the interview, asking key questions about one’s previous job and/or education experience will allow a hiring manager to gain more insight in what the candidate’s background can bring to the company.

AttitudeAnother consideration hiring managers should take are the attitudes of the recruits. Although this task can be difficult to gauge in the hiring process as interaction with the candidate is limited, there are certain questions that can be asked or research that can be conducted to get a baseline on what to expect from a potential hire. A phone call to a previous company the recruit worked for can give a business owner a better understanding of the future employee’s work ethic. The human resources department of past employers can answer questions such as their attendance, behavior, and if the candidate was terminated or resigned which can influence a future employer’s decision. How will these factors influence your company and is this person a good fit are just a few questions to ask when hiring new employees.CostThe best approach in hiring new employees is looking at the cost. What will it cost your company to choose a horrible candidate and what will it cost to choose a great one? The candidate with the most experience may request a higher salary than the candidate with the least experience but a smart hiring manager must look at both sides of the coin before offering a job to either candidate. Can your company afford to train a new employee until she or he reaches their full potential? Can your company afford to keep a candidate with so much experience who will more than likely want to see growth in both experience and paycheck? The short term and long term cost of hiring an employee should always be a priority in the decision making process of hiring a new employee.
