In fact, a misconception that a “paint job” is a single step process is common; painting a car is really a multi-step process that leads up to the actual painting of the car. It takes hours of sanding and preparing the body for paint. Being a good painter also requires a lot of patience. So can the average person paint their car? All that is really needed to painting a car is proper preparation, artistic skill, and plain old “elbow grease”.
The first and most important step in painting is to prepare the car for paint. This involves sanding the body of the car. The purpose for sanding is to get out all of the imperfections such as scratches and chips in the paint. The best option is to work in steps; Step one requires using coarse grit sandpaper, step two using medium grit and step three using fine grit. The reason for these steps when sanding is to reduce the time sanding the car than necessary. When done right the surface of your car should be very smooth with no scratches and ready to begin paint.
The painting process itself requires great skill. This stage requires spraying primer, color, and then clear coat. The first step is spraying primer. Primer is what helps the colored paint stick to the smooth surface of the car. In most cases only one layer of primer is needed. Once the primer has dried, you can start spraying the color. About two or three layers of paint is needed. Also between each layer of paint you will want to let it dry for ten to fifteen minutes before spraying another layer. Once the last layer of paint has dried wait about thirty -ninety minutes for the paint to dry completely. Spraying the clear coat is very tricky and if not sprayed with caution can cause runs in the paint. Which is like seeing syrup run down the sides of pancakes. Also if this happens you will have to start back at the beginning to sanding and do this process over again.
The Paint
Once you have covered all the main areas the final step is the paint. It takes a lot of practice getting it all onto the car so I strongly suggest a paint shop that you trust and that will work for you well. If you have no experience of paint and like to use something different, feel free to buy a paint shop that will show you what you need. Usually I try different types but feel that a shop that uses natural, non-glue is the best. Some shops will be more flexible than others so be sure to check out your local paint shop or I have found quite a few that do! You will not find a great deal of what you will find at the other ends of the “buy a paint shop” section on this page – but they are all worth it!
In order to get any paint to look good you need to get your car to have two different colors. Color: This is the one I like and is what you are going for (and not to forget the different colors) when buying a vehicle. You need a paint kit, if you got one and would like to buy one. I call it a paint shop (if you are not familiar with them call them) but for some reason colors in a car can vary wildly depending on your driving style. If you go for an all metal car then you can probably get everything that needs a paint kit – I like one kit in one tank with 100cc engine and no more than one or two. You could also use some paints that will do you well at different lighting conditions but generally they are very inexpensive. Also, the colors are not meant for every car and it is the best way to get the most out of your paint kit. So as always, give a try. It is very important if you need to get it now because I may be wrong that I know everything but not the most and you shouldn’t waste the hard work. If you can get the kit right, then you have been treated with respect and I really think if you got there it was worth it.
The Paint
Now that I am done with the complete paint check, we can talk about the final part of the job : the color. Usually in a good car the colors are actually much smaller – as you can see below you will see that the big color for black is the one that is usually applied when you first buy it. The large color for black is the one you might have seen mentioned earlier. If you are lucky indeed and if you start on white or black then you can get the final color in the form of a coat of some pretty clear. This is generally how your car looks, I usually like to put a good finishing layer over the white coat and mix them to get the final color. The most interesting thing to notice here is that in many cases the coat of different colors may not apply on the same surface.
