It’s been two years since I’ve been in Brooklyn, New York. The town where I was born, the town I first learned how to hustle for my own money and the town where I first learned most things I know now. I now work in Chicago, my job has taken most of my time that I rely come home. My father has longed to have me back home, even if it was just for a day. Lucky for him this weekend I was free, so I decided to come home to come spend the weekend with him. I arrived on Friday night, we used the whole of Saturday to watch movies and play a little soccer like we used to do.
But my stay was coming to an end. It was Sunday night already. I asked him if he would love to take a walk with me, around our block since it was my last night in Brooklyn. My dad warned me that he would love to, but Brooklyn wasn’t the safest place to take a walk in the night. I pleaded with him, and told him that one night won’t kill. My father agreed, so we went out in the cold dark night of Brooklyn. We were discussing on how my job is going in Chicago until we saw two men coming in our direction. They were all dressed in black, at first I thought they just came to ask a question or something but unknowingly to us they had a different mission that night. I saw both of them dig their hands in their pockets and brought out a gun and pointed it towards us. That is when it hit me that this was no joke.
My dad and I turned around and pretended like we didn’t see them, but when we turned around two men also dressed in black were behind us. My heart started beating faster than usual. My dad whispered that it was the boys who come to harass people and that they all lived in Block 24. My dad took my hands and held it really tight. They asked my dad and I if we had any money or valuables on us. We told them no, that we only came out for a walk. You could see the anger in their faces when we said we had nothing on us.
