The Mayer’s were the first to affix a brand name to their product. They were one of the first recognized meat brands, one of the first companies to be approved by the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) and were the first to actually volunteer. The FSIS was created to ensure the purity of the products sold. The Oscar Mayer Company set new standards for the meat market industry.
At the age of fourteen, Oscar F. Mayer immigrated to America form Germany. He first started when he answered a “help wanted” poster as and a butcher’s boy. Over a period of six years while Oscar was in America his brother Gottifried became a well-established “wurtmacher”(sausage maker) and ham curer. In 1883 Oscar and (newly immigrated) Gotterfried set up their first small retail store near Chicago’s north side where business flourished from the first day. From that the business grew into a well-known industry. Oscar Mayer’s life here was devoted to his family and the family business. When he died, his son Oscar G. Mayer was elected chairman of the board and his son Oscar G. Mayer Jr. was elected president of his grandfather’s company.

In the late 1880s, Oscar Mayer moved permanently to the Chicago area to attend the boarding school, which he completed in 1888. The family moved to Washington Heights the following year. While on a trip to visit G. H. and my parents about 1885, M. H. Mayer left his brother Peter Mayer and their wives, Martha (L. Besscher’s children) and Maria-Ann-Louise “Lou” to move back and take care of their two young children. After leaving their children, and moving further north, he worked the farm with the mother of the family, Mica. They moved to a land near St. Charles, Minnesota to live with their mother. Oscar Mayer took Mica as his only son in the family and took his father as his wife. Since then the family has been the family business. Despite the departure, Oscar Mayer still has a place in the family business, and continues to make new business acquisitions. He also is involved in the production of food that is traditionally cooked, such as lasagna, pizza and cheesecake. In the late 1980s Oscar Mayer moved to the St. Louis area for six years, where he continued his entrepreneurial and business life. Prior to leaving for St. Louis, he spent time in London, Britain, Switzerland, and Sweden, becoming a merchant, farmer, printer, and merchant merchant. He married Anna Marie Kekka (Benson) in 1974, and she has three boys born in San Francisco. Since moving to California he has resided in St. Charles, Maryland, the Santa Barbara area and Chicago. Menno G. Mayer was born in St. Louis to Mary Ann Margie Mayer and Edward M. Gerson. He was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and worked as an electrician, cook, and farmer until his father, M. H., died from a illness in 1889. He spent this last decade of his life in St. Louis as a school bus driver but was married before he was able to obtain a college degree. He spent the rest of his life working for the U.S. government in his native Italy, but is no longer employed nor does he support himself in the U.S., where he still lives under the title of “Assistant Secretary of War.” In 1892 he retired from the U.S. Navy for good to attend Harvard University, where he established the first American Academy of Religion. He subsequently completed the degree he had taught briefly in France. Before him served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army. The Oscar Mayer CO set itself apart from the others. Not just by their size or quality but also by packaging. Have you ever noticed how all Oscar Mayer products come in yellow packaging? That yellow packaging started out as a yellow band that was wrapped around Oscar Mayer’s wieners. In 1944 the company invented a machine that wrapped the yellow bands around the products automatically, thus eliminating hours of hand wrapping. By 1968, the Oscar Mayer CO reached out through prime time television. They ran their commercials during such classics as “The Carol Burnett Show”, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “ The Wonderful world of Disney”. Not to mention the appearance of the wiener mobile which heavily promoted the company at store openings and public events. They gave out free samples of the meat and pressed a wiener whistle in to every willing hand. In addition to the wiener mobile, their jingles got stuck in your head for days and days at a time. Songs like “the Oscar Mayer Wiener song”(1963) and the wildly popular “Oscar Mayer BOLOGNA song”.
