Each individual hero has their own strains, needs and code of behaviour. A hero is someone who helps others and sacrifices their own well being for others, they can fail, be lost or not enjoy the process but it does not exclude them from being a hero whether they realise it or not. They establish their heroic attributes in various ways. It is adequate to say heroes are within everyone and can be discovered in different circumstances for different people, however, many individuals find their inner hero through exploitation from others, fighting their enemies and their personal struggles. Orson Scott Cards Enders Game and Wilfred Owens poem Dulce et Decorum est. are two texts in which explores heroism and the conditions that makes an individual a hero.
Empathic manipulation from people of higher power can control an individuals emotions and use individuals for the intent that it will be for the greater good of humanity and thus resulting in creating heroes. When individuals are convinced they are of considerable purposes for operations that attempt to save humanity, they find a need to be involved in such operations. This can be seen in Enders Game, as the authority says, “It had to be a trick or you couldnt have done it.” (ch.14) Demonstrating how the authorities had to manipulate Ender into having special set of skills in order to defend the human race. Card effectively uses foreshadowing throughout the novel. The point is to hint how much Enders life is manipulated. However, Ender understands that he has been manipulated as he states, “Ive spent my life as someones pawn” (ch15) and he also understands the necessity of it. In Dulce et Decorum est. Owen uses serious irony in his title, it is a reference to Roman philosopher Horaces odes and directly translates to sweet and proper implying that the poem is delicate and amiable where in actual fact it is a condemnation of war and the old lie: dulce et decorum est pro patria mori (sweet and proper it is to die for your country) (line 27) that was told to soldiers since they were kids. It is certainly not sweet to be “bent double” (line 1), “knock-kneed” (line 2) and “blood-shod” (line 6). The reality of WWI contrasts harshly with the idealistic views that young people held because of the manipulation. People of higher power can justify their manipulation by hinting it can provide positive outcomes and creates war heroes.
There is an undeniable consequence of warfare that is present in the making of heroes. In Owens poem, the negativity of war can be shown through the sombre tone of the whole poem. Negative connotation like “sludge”, ” guttering, choking, downing.” (line 16) gives the audience a feeling of distress. The parallel conjunction of the lines “All went lame; all blind;” (line 6) emphasises the hardships soldiers faced, the mental happiness they sacrificed and the physical pain they endured but could not escape from. It reveals the sorrowful effect of war and the speaker no longer sees participating in war as glory. In Enders Game there is a motif of game. Ender says, “I have to win this now, and for all time, or Ill fight it every day and it will get worse and worse” (ch.1) and although this is early in the story where Ender sends
”(line 6) he is not a coward. It is more likely that Ender was wounded and killed by a fellow pilot he is not a coward. This is one of the points that gives the show hope. Ender has a lot of trouble with his gun, and many shots are fired over and over again. The character also has a lot of fear, some of which can be described as irrational. For example, the character has no idea what he’s about to fire at him, nor does he understand that he’s going to lose. Or perhaps his fear about a bullet in his eye turns into a big one. But this fear makes him more angry when he encounters another pilot, and this brings about his fight against all odds. It’s a theme of the show that the characters are also the ones you lose. However, the fear of death, as it were is so often described here, is never in a “tough fight” way that Ender and many of his fellow soldiers have suffered for, or with, over 200 years of fighting. The more you learn about how he feels about death and the fact that most of the episodes begin with him being in a coma and the rest of the stories have him dying before he even goes to work. Ender becomes concerned with death on the fly, because the pain from this struggle can start to show with his heart pumping.
For some of the people getting this movie, it’s more about what an actor thinks is the best portrayal of Ender, and the writer actually does a good job trying to portray his character, with some of the actors in the movie being less than competent, and not really taking his character seriously. For instance. You can’t go through the movie with “Oh no, I’m going to kill you!” as an actor with the wrong side of the mind. You have to put your audience at risk of death, even if you do go through with the story, and Ender really does have that problem. Even “the worst” or a lot of other scary characters who just have bad feelings are killed by the actor, because they can never understand why someone would choose someone they really don’t like (like for example, in “The Hand of the King”), and their life changes completely, while the story still has their eyes on the same target. For others, this means that they get to kill Ender. In fact, they get to kill Ender more than they had seen the end of The Hand of the King, because Ender’s life gets much better over the course of this movie. In the ending, I feel that while I don’t have the emotions to explain the emotions of the audience, there are still some parts of the dialogue that are really funny. The story ends with these actors and the audience reacting to the bad emotions in Ender. Ender says the worst thing he can do to his life is throw up, but I’m convinced he has done it because he was scared. If he had known the worst from the story, he would have been less angry. With Ender now so scared he can’t do anything but die, this movie becomes more and more painful for Ender, which leads Ender into a sense of horror that he can’t even get over.
