Dupont – Nylon-Bristled Toothbrushes
The Oral-B name was a combination of oral hygiene and the letter B, which means better. Oral-
B wasnt the worlds first modern toothbrush and it was actually DuPont who first introduced
nylon-bristled toothbrushes in the market upon their invention of nylon. This was year 1938,
and it was not until 1950 when Californian periodontist Dr Robert Hutson designed and
patented the first Oral-B 60, improving upon the existing toothbrush by having 60 soft and
round ended bristles. From the very start, dentists acceptance of his product was a compelling
testimony to the brands claim. As Dr. Hutson mentioned in an interview, he knew his
innovation was a good thing but he had never expected dentists to accept his product and even
recommend it to people.
Not surprisingly, the small size of the countrys oral market care is reflected in its current state
of oral health. Based on the 2006 National Oral Health Survey, tooth decay is the number one
disease in the country and even outranges the combined rates of disease in the Philippines.
More than three fourths of the countrys population has never seen the light of a dentists lamp
and almost 98% of children aged 6 has dental decay. The World Health Organization also claims
that the countrys traditions, beliefs and culture may have a hand in the lack of support in oral
health.
