The antagonist is Old Miserys house, because of what it stands for. I think the conflict is man vs. society.2. The suspense of the story was seeing if the gang could destroy the house on time without getting caught; especially since old misery was back early from his trip.3. Unlike commercial fiction the characters were more flawed and realistic. Another thing is that you understand the worldview and the motivation behind why they destroyed the house. Last, even though the ending was what the protagonist wanted to accomplish it was still unsettling.4a. Trevors motivation for destroying the house was because it was the only house that was not destroyed from the blitz bombing. Trevor also was jealous that his dad is no longer an architect , and Old Miserys house was built by one one the most famous architects in England. The gang agreed to do it because it will bring them notoriety. They believe that after destroying that house all of London will know they did it.b. Blackie didnt leave because he wanted the gang to be famous.c. The gang knew the importance of what it means by destroying the house.
d. They burned the bank notes to prove that they arent stealing, but destroying everything.e. They dont want to harm Old Misery, just the house. They are actually showing him some consideration by giving him food and blankets. f. The lorry driver found it amusing because the house was not effected by the bombing; it stood with dignity and now its in rubles. By pinching free rides the gang was not trying to hurt anybody, and when they destroyed Old Miserys house they were not trying to harm Old Misery. 5. The Blitz was the bombing of London by the Nazis after WW2. Also the Wormsly Common Underground Station was where you hid when the the bombing is happening and you had no where else to go. The gang was too young to even know that what was going on because at the time Blackie would have been one years old, but it is the very reason why they destroyed Old Miserys house. The consequences of the war is how it effected the children in the story. I dont believe the story stated the cause of the war.
Drake, A: “I’m a little too dumb to know that this story is meant to imply that they actually had to get away, that this was their plan. They used the house as their base, because the Nazis used the house as their base in the first place…that we were trying to make sure that the house got all the things that we could get.”
Blackie, The: “This is how I got through it, I mean at least, right away. That’s how I got through it, even though we just ended the World War 1 at 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. So we got to have it done as quickly as possible as quickly as we could and the Germans were too slow on the computer. We were too quick then, though I would say that we are now on the brink of the big catastrophe and it would be a very, very bad day for everyone involved, including the kids. I know because they are very young, so my children were probably in the first place when we got this story.”
Blackie, The: “That’s the one word that I use: the dark. And there were some things I could have done differently…but I decided I need to do something. They gave me something I didn’t know I still don’t know”
Drake, The: “The last thing he said was…so the idea seemed that maybe the first time they started to see the destruction they would move on, and that would be a pretty good way of getting people from there. I don’t know if that worked. But then after that, in the middle of it, as soon as you were told by the kids, ‘There’s nothing they can do, they can’t do anything, just stay here,’ they just sat there, kept going on, going there.”
Blackie, The: “Then I thought something was amign for it. Someone had put all the bombs that were placed on the streets, there were all sorts of terrible scenes in New Kensington. The story you tell me is that in the middle of it, the children saw the destruction, which was a pretty good thing. I really thought I can do something to change things, but what’s going on in New Kensington is pretty shocking to me. The kids did not want to think of that.”
A young daughter of the gang and an aide to The Dukes “They could not afford to go into the buildings. They couldn’t afford to go into the kitchens. And there was nothing they could do to change that…”
Drake, The: “I am very frightened of the children being seen here, seeing what this building looks like, that’s not the end of it, this is what comes next. … It was going to kill me.”
