The Ocean Habitat
The Ocean is made up of many different plants and animals and they all are needed to help the ocean life survive. Fish are one species that live in the ocean they have scales and fins, fish use there gills to breath in the air that is in the water. Sharks are another animal that lives in the ocean and they feed on other fish, sharks can smell things from very far away and they swim by moving there body from side to side. The ocean has many other animals like Octopus, Dolphins and crabs. All marine mammals have special traits that allow them to dive deep and stay underwater for a long time. At some point, all must return to the surface to breathe. Whales and dolphins breathe through single or paired blowholes on the dorsal (back) surface of their head. At the surface, they quickly inhale and relax the muscular flap to close it so they can dive.
Kelp is a type of seaweed. It is brown and has a long, ruffled shape. Kelp attaches easily to rocks and serves as a good hiding place for small fish and crustaceans. Under the ocean seaweed grows in large patches. The tallest plants are called rockweed or seawacks. Seaweed has no roots, but can attach easily to rocks that lie beneath the ocean floor, rocks that protrude into the open from the ocean floor, or the ocean floor itself.
