The main cause of global warming is the increased emission of greenhouse gases like  carbon dioxide. It is only logical to reduce the emission of CO2 if nuclear power plants are used instead of other technologies. To accomplish the needed CO2 emissions cuts, it was predicted that global nuclear power generation capacity needs to increase to 930 gigawatts from 396 gigawatts by 2050. According to data from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), nuclear power emits, on average, 15 g CO2/kWh, which is 30 times less than natural gas, 65 times less than coal and three times less than solar. In its Assessment Report released in 2014, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicted that nuclear usage should increase quadruple by 2050. For this to happen, 80% of global electricity will need to be produced from nuclear power plants. This is an objective that all interested parties should share.Safety issues regarding nuclear energy have long being debated. Countries should have the right to choose nuclear energy to reduce CO2 emissions. Their choice should not be restricted by internationally signed conventions or protocols.

To address safety concerns, all plants already have guidelines for Severe Accident Management. The experience following Fukushima accident is being applied in designing such guidelines to prepare the relevant parties in the case of nuclear emergency. In mid-2011 the IAEA launched a new communication platform to simplify information exchange during nuclear emergencies. The system has been under development since 2009 but was actually launched in response to the accident at Fukushima. In addition to that, the designs for nuclear plants being developed for implementation in coming decades contain numerous safety improvements based on operational experience. The first two of these advanced reactors  began their operation in Japan in 1996.
