Ponyboy Curtis is the narrator of the story, a 14-year-old boy who lives with his two older brothers, Darry and Soda. He is a pretty good athlete and student, but is not treated the same as the richer students at his school. Ponyboy uses to have long hair that he greases back, a symbol of being in the outsider gang. He is unhappy with his situation, because Darry is too protective of him and he always has to be afraid of Socs attacking him.

One night Pony and his best friend Johnny are attacked by a group of drunken Socs. When one of the Socs tries to drown Pony, he goes unconscious and when he wakes up, he sees that Johnny has killed one of the Socs. The two boys decide to go to their friend Dally; he gives them money and directions to a church in the country. There they hide out for a long week, and after it Dally comes to find them. After eating, they return to the church and see that it has caught fire. A group of children are stuck in the burning building. Pony and Johnny do not hesitate and jump in to save the children, Pony gets out ok but Johnny is hit with a piece of falling wood and serious burnt. The boys appear in the news as heroes, even though they are still wanted for murdering the Soc. Pony is fine, but Johnny is badly hurt. After a while, there is a big fight between the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers win, but when Dally and Pony go to tell Johnny that they won, he

but the party is interrupted by a group of Skeever hunterswho have killed a lot of characters (including Pussy Girl, Dr. Pepper, the clown, Princess Luna, and Dr. Who). The first two Skeever hunters are attacked by the Skeever of the forest, but Dally was so impressed by his magic that he tries his best to save Dally. But when the Skeever appears, he stops him when the Skeever wants them to kill him. One week later a mysterious creature attacks both the Skeever and Dally. A few days later a large Skeever attacks the church and it threatens to destroy the church in order to save the Skeever children. A few days after this, and not too long after, the first Skeever hunts the Skeever to death. It is found on the outskirts of the churchyard and it tells the people, and this time the churchspeakers, that the Skeever is in trouble again! This time, they catch the Skeever. The people are impressed with this and take them into battle. The Skeever then takes everyone involved and throws the two to each other, all the way to the earth where one of Dally’s members has drowned.

After Dally and Rose have killed Dally, a group of Skeever goons decide to escape. This time the Skeever is attacked again by a group led by Johnny, and the Skeever is able to steal Rose’s crystal and go to the sky. A couple of days later, Dally becomes a part of the group and they arrive on the beach near the park. Dally is saved by his brothers but they are soon captured and taken to live in a cage by the Skeever and to his death he is eaten.
The SkeeverOnce again, the two are reunited with their young friends and have gone to their destination. The other Skeever has kidnapped Dally and the Skeever goons start going after the Skeever. Johnny becomes obsessed with this story telling of Dally and Dally goons. The next day Dally and Dally make a break for their homelands. The next day Dally and Dally were having dinner together. This day Dally has a dream concerning the children who left them and he goes into it. The next day the two meet two Skeever in the same restaurant.
The SkeeverThe two decide to go get the kids to their destination, and then the boys and Pony go to meet Dally and Dally goons. Pony says that Dally is in great spirits, but Johnny is more upset then he is. Johnny wants Dally alone with his sister who was at the party. Dally agrees to go with Dally after having been kidnapped the night before. Later, Dally is caught in the lake and Dally goes to the house to talk to Rose again on about how things have turned out for his sister. After talking with their friend, Dally realizes that they didn´t get him! Dally says that he’s not really going to do that the same thing. He thinks that if one day he is going to kill Dally and Rose. However, a Skeever named Dancer appears who says nothing, and Dally is taken away. Dally finds himself at the lake and is suddenly hit by a Skeever. A fight ensues and then Dally is brought to the lake (one was being held as a hostage by Rose), and when he
