A new startup company joins the vastly populated business world every day in hopes to be the next successful provider of a product or service that people rave about. That was the goal of a particular company that previously employed myself some years ago. This wholesale distributor was present in four different cities across the state of California and offered more than 10,000 different products from over 100 distinct manufactures within the low voltage industry. The most challenging part of working for a distributor is supposed to be the sales generation aspect of business, but for not for this specific company. The sales were up and the system was down, or crippled to say the least. Each branch operated nearly independent of one another causing an purchasing, inventory, and sales nightmare. There was not a networked system that allowed real-time inventory to be shared or viewed by each branch which caused almost every sale to be an email thread and/or phone call marathon in order to make a sale quite often. With the expansion of the company, increasing sales, and growing needs, these activities were a critical factor for success of the business. The geographically distant operations make data gathering, integration and analysis a difficult task for the company giving it a drawback against other competitors in the market. Un-availability of data to the headquarters over a centralized database caused delays in financial reporting of the company. The delay caused by the disintegration of data was damaging to company’s image from the point of view of customers and employees alike.
