Nelson Mandela
The South African activist and former president Nelson Mandela helped bring an end to apartheid and has been a global advocate for human rights. As a member of the African National Congress party, he was a leader of both peaceful protests and armed resistance against those in favour of a caucasian run society in a racially divided South Africa. His actions landed him in prison for nearly 30 years and made him the face of the movement against apartheid both within his country and internationally. When released on February 11, 1990, he participated in the elimination of apartheid and became the first black president of South Africa, creating a diverse government. He remained devoted to peace and social justice in his own nation and around the world. He is without question one of the most important figures in recent history and a man whose story of determination and hope gives strength to people all over the world.

Nelson Mandela’s courageous spirit and belief in the right of all people to be equals and live in harmony allowed him to overcome incredible obstacles. Although he spent almost 30 years in a South African prison, his story is full of hope and success. Mandela’s fortitude is shown through mental and emotional strength in facing difficulty, adversity, danger, or temptations courageously. His fight for peace and equality in South Africa cost him his freedom and brought with it hardships and struggles unimaginable to most. By being just and righteousness Mandela became particularly interested in the increasingly unstable politics of his country. Fiercely objecting to the racist treatment of all coloured people in South Africa, Nelson Mandela became leader of the ANC and focused on fighting against the apartheid.
