Imagine a world where finding natural produce in a farmers field was just as easy as walking down a super market isle. Wait, isnt it like that now? Isnt that our reality? It is impossible to walk into a grocery store without passing a package that boasts natural across its face, but how much of that is product marketing and how much is true? These and similar question have been making quite the stir lately and people want to know exactly what they are eating. By definition natural is an adjective that means existing in or derived from nature; not made or caused by humankind or in a food sense having had a minimum of processing or preservative treatment ( Oxford University Press). The controversy in the super market really relies on the amount of preservatives, hormones, and antibiotics that are included in the raising and packaging of the product. The FDA doesnt have a clear definition of a “natural product” as they say it is too difficult to define as all food that has been processed is no longer a product of the earth ( The Food and Drug Administration). However, the FDA did consider high fructose corn syrup a natural product even though it highly processed because it was derived from a natural product. I highly doubt that high fructose corn syrup is anything close to a natural product. The plain and simple truth is that corporations are tricking the general public by using the word natural to in an a way that is incredibly out of context and the FDA is allowing them to do it.
