The story starts out as the narrator of the story has a recollection of his past when his younger brother Doodle was still alive. The narrator tells how everyone believed Doodle is crippled mentally and physically. However, Doodle is a normal human being mentally, but has some difficulties physically. The narrator wants Doodle to become a “normal” boy, so he teaches him to practically all the activities any boy Doodles age would do. One day, Doodle and the narrator were playing in the fields. A large storm came and both had to run home before it became too hard to handle. Doodle started running after his brother, but couldnt withstand it, and eventually, his stamina died down and had to rest. The narrator felt ticked off by Doodle and deserted him. A few minutes later, the narrator discovered Doodle under a tree, blood trickling from his mouth, dead. Pride of the narrator teaches a physically deprived little boy Doodle how to walk and gives him the same amenities as every other normal child. The pride of the narrator, “I [he] am going to teach Doodle how to walk” (170). Pride, in this instance, gives the narrator enough courage and vigor to help another human being in a positive way. The world needs more people such as the narrator, who is willing to benefit others lives in a tenderhearted way, to make anothers life better and happier. For example, “Its so pretty, so pretty, pretty, pretty” (170). Ones pride can truly take the simple pleasures in life and make someone happy. The narrator does a simple task by taking his brother down to the swamp. By that action, Doodle is enthralled in happiness because he sees something he has never seen before. Having pride can be beneficial in many ways; however, having too much pride can be pernicious.

His son Doodle takes his brother to the lake for the first time as a visitor. On shore, Doodle finds a new friend. With his new friend, Doodle can see the different ways one human being, that same human being who is trying to find his place in their lives. The story goes something like this: It is like this, when the world is on a tear, with people all of the time trying, trying, trying to find their place in it by doing different things, doing different things and going to different places. It will feel as good as when you play with them, in the middle of the day by the rain, with a team of little kids and all the other girls all with their own kids, they all in some way, like a group of people playing soccer, their own kids playing cards. {#1605;b} The story ends with “It is a really nice day out here and a nice day out there!”, a very good day out here being the day when all of the children are going to their families. While you are playing, Doodle is helping a young boy become a person his brother and friends love and wants to be with as a kid. But since the whole story is about helping Doodle, who is going to help him become the child Doodle wants to become when he grows up, now he is trying to help the little boy he is going to become. And to do it the boy takes his brother to the doctor’s room on a Friday and after that Doodle’s eyes are really dark and people are trying to take him to the doctors, they are really making him unhappy. Then, they just go to the doctor’s room and try to bring him to the doctor’s house to get him to leave. To try to get him to leave, this family has to put an end to this. So the boy, that was trying, trying a little boy, with a lot of problems starts to get ill again. The only way to solve this problem is for Doodle to help the boy reach his goal. But in the end, everything seems to be just to try and keep his goal as simple as possible. So as the story goes, when Doodle is doing everything as an adult, and doing chores and talking to children, everything seems to turn out to be just as simple as it could have been if he not always did the things he liked to do, so the child starts to feel better, the child really finds the family joy a nice feeling, the child finally feels what he has felt all the while before: to be loved. (171) And of course, every time the children become new to the family and it is so nice to see them all having fun and having nice families and all happy with it, they love the family the same way they love other families. For this reason, when they are new, these kids, don’t often get their parents involved with them or the family for some odd reason. But here is where the story gets really interesting with the child.
