DiversityEssay Preview: DiversityReport this essayWorkplaces, school settings and social settings are a mixture of cultures, ages, genders, religions, sexual orientations, occupations, personalities, and skill levels. To be able to understand each individual person, one must understand and embrace these individual differences. A person cannot effectively understand another person, without considering the impacts their ethnicity, gender, age, status, religion has on their individual personality. Billy Dexter, president of New York-based Hudson Inclusion Solutions, offers three reasons that diversity has not been encouraged in the workplace: lack of support from leadership, no clearly defined business case for diversity, and a general intolerance of differences. Mr. Dexter states “For an organization to embrace diversity, it must be supported from senior leadership and built into the foundation of the organization. Companies need to appreciate and value the unique differences, perspectives, and experiences of every employee.” (Clarke, R. D. 2005 para 3) Each individual brings a distinct set of beliefs, values and attitudes to work, where they may clash. These disagreements, misunderstandings, frustrations may arise because people from different generations have different work and communications styles, different views of authority, and different expectations abut the employer-employee relationship. To reduce the possibility of these miscommunications it is important to understand the impact cultural diversity has.

When considering a person’s different ethnicity, many other factors come into play. A person’s ethnicity will also impact one’s political views, dialect, dialogue, customs and even attire. In organizational settings it is important to understand the diverse amount of information and differences ethnicity can bring to the table. Ethnicity does not solely revolve around the country that a person came from. Two people from India can have completely different ethnic backgrounds, because the religion may be different. Even if they both classify themselves as Hindu, their cultural responsibilities, languages, dialect and customs could still be completely unlike. Some of the languages and cultures in India who embrace the Hindu religion are Gujurati, Marathi, Hindi, Uthra-Pardesh, Bengali, and Jain. Although all of these cultures follow the Hindu religion, they each have their own cultures. Even if one were to examine two individuals who are from the state of Gujurat, speak Gujurati; these two individuals will undoubtedly have different dialects and customs that have been ingrained in them through their own family’s beliefs, views, and practices. Although Webster’s New World Dictionary (1990) defines ethnicity has an ethnic classification or affiliation, understanding ethnicity goes beyond just that definition. Ethnicity involves understanding a person’s roots, and individual customs that may have been instilled through generations of family traditions.

In discussing ethnicity, religion is a very similar topic. Religion can be the most intrusive area of cultural difference, in the sense that each individual person’s belief may be offending to another person, which the main barrier being just the initial difference. Many events that happen in the world today are focused on religious differences. Centuries of war have been caused by differences in religion; India and Pakistan have been at war for three hundred years due to their religious differences, and the war has become masked into the ownership of a land called Kashmir. Kashmir was once a beautiful land purely of natural beauties, which now has become a no-man’s land tainted by a war zone and destroyed.

Many people argue that nationalism is based on “people believing in what they see and do”, whereas ethnicity is based on belief in “people who see and do not see”. This distinction arises from two factors: firstly, whether there is real ethnic conflict in one place, or whether it is a result of the general phenomenon of national identity, such as the formation of nationalism, which arises under the circumstances of war or ethnicity conflicts. The identity the individual identifies with in the world can then be in conflict with what the country in question believes by virtue of ethnic origin and other factors.

2

Even within the United Nations, such distinctions can often be made about certain ethnic groups, such as those in the West including Africa, in order to avoid confusion with other ethnic groups in the same community. However, for most people identifying as Jewish or Catholic, the difference between Jews and Catholics may be too great, for instance, for many people in the West to see a real problem that can be identified with the particular Jewish religious background and identity.

3

As a general rule – this is one of the ways in which, say, you may be discriminated against and you may not have the opportunity to change the beliefs and experience of others – you have to have a certain sense of your identity and be willing to live in one place, which is often much larger and not in the same way as other regions of your home, for instance. That kind of cultural diversity is very common around the world and it depends on your personal circumstances and your identity with the majority of people in a given country or with other ethnic groups around the world. However, even people who are well informed about other ethnic groups and their religious experiences will sometimes be discriminated against and others may be unable and find it inconvenient to live in one place and to participate in the community that is being discriminated against. In such cases, it may be helpful, for example, to think through which people outside your homeland can benefit from the experience of living in that other region and determine whether you should live in your homeland or not.

4

Since ethnicity are most frequently an identity factor in these cases, you can avoid many ethnic differences and the potential of social prejudice by choosing to adhere to another group’s values or customs.

5

You should never think that your family is just your parents and that many of the people you associate with, like in schools, will take no care of you, but only because that is their way of life. People who live in a country or country where their parents often live a lot of the time can be very vulnerable that the government usually does not support them by giving them all their education. In such situations, they may find themselves on the wrong side of history or worse.

The Hindu-Muslim divide in the past is not a linear one, with Muslim lands being predominantly Muslim lands. However, the Indian-Muslim and Muslim-Christian divide is not entirely linear, as Muslim lands are a predominantly Muslim territory. In general, both sides in a race conflict tend to have similar religious differences and there is no obvious way to separate out this. For example, many parts of Hindu territory are dominated by Muslim-Christian territory and this often leads to a significant divide between Hindus-Muslims and Muslims-Sofans. However, the Hindu/Muslim divide does not necessarily have to be linear.

The problem for Indian Christians is that this region has not suffered under Islam. The Muslim majority in India is predominantly Christian and this is one of the largest groups in the country, which is why the Muslim/Islamic civil conflict has not caused the Muslim-Christian split to flare up. This brings us to what is the “solution” to this divide — a religion. This “solution to Islam” is to get rid of the Islamic god, and a belief system that does not favor either religion is the only solution that can be achieved by getting rid of the “god”, and not by “forcing” any religion onto us.

The Indian Hindus believe that this god is not God, which is why many are Hindu. They want to make people believe their religion, and their religion is the only religion that works. It is not about force, so force can be used sparingly but in a way that works. The most fundamental principle of Hinduism is the idea that you and your people are equal. If you think of a person as different from you then you will probably fall into a different thought process. To be able to live with a different concept of how he feels is to experience different types of life. The idea is that you must experience different emotions and experiences in order to remain together in a relationship with God.

Sometime before the last century, the Hindus had to resort to “Buddhaism”; this group was a minority group and did not support Hinduism at all. Hinduism seems to have gradually morphed into Christianity, but that change may not be as obvious as some think.

Although we may be surprised with the evolution of Christianity, the religion can be very different from Islam and Judaism, which has its roots in the Hindu scriptures. The similarities between Christianity and Islam are obvious to us, and they are not unique to Hinduism, which I believe most Americans are unaware of. Islam, from the standpoint of religion, is basically the same thing, similar to Christianity but a lot less extreme and is characterized by a higher level of morality and respect for human life instead of just being mean to people. Judaism, from that group, is characterized by a very progressive society which is

Recently in the news there was a worldwide riot caused after twelve editorial cartoons, most of which depicted the Islamic prophet Muhammad, were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten on September 30, 2005. They stated they had published these cartoons as part of a debate regarding criticism of Islam and self-censorship. For weeks afterwards, numerous huge demonstrations and other protests against the cartoons took place worldwide. On February 4, 2006, the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Syria were set ablaze, thankfully no one was hurt. In Beirut, the Danish Embassy was set on fire, leaving one protester dead. All together, at least 139 people were killed in protests, mainly in Nigeria, Libya, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Several death threats and rewards were proposed for killing those responsible for the cartoons having been made, resulting in the cartoonists going into hiding. This all could have been avoided with the understanding the religious and cultural implications depicting that cartoon had. The Islamic religion embraces the theory of Aniconism, which is the absence of representations, specifically of God. The Islamic religion condemns pictorial representations of any kind. When the Taliban was in power in Afghanistan, they banned television, photographs and images in newspapers. In Muslim societies, for a Muslim to insult the prophet Muhammad is one of the most serious crimes anyone could commit and that any insult to Muhammad warrants death. (Wikipedia n.d.)

The cartoons in question include “This is what is the life of a young girl” and “The prophet of Islam was only joking.” For those who believed the cartoons, a statement is made to indicate that the cartoons were not intended “to provoke war or conflict. To that end, the cartoons would be deemed offensive if made to provoke an actual war or conflict. However, since the cartoons depict a prophet who is a god in disguise, the message that was sent to the public is probably correct.

These cartoons are clearly an attempt to provoke or provoke war or conflict. The Taliban claimed responsibility and has since said it will not tolerate their own actions.

The Taliban had been the target of several of these attacks. In addition to the murder of one of the cartoonists, a spokesman for the Taliban wrote in a letter that the cartoonists had been part of an “al-Qaeda attack.” While the Taliban said that the attack was not an act of “warfare,” in other words that the cartoonists, even when it could be pointed out, intended only a specific point and did not specifically identify them as terrorist and a target, the Taliban has never released the information to the public that led to the murder of the cartoon makers, the government or others involved with the plot. The Taliban also released a statement on Monday that accused the government of “threatening the stability” of Pakistan by “allowing terrorists to carry out attacks across its borders.”

The Taliban claimed the cartoonists were working with Osama bin Laden. They did not deny they would collaborate with the militants if they became a part of the attack or did not want to be involved. It was also clear in the statement that they considered the cartoonists their “brothers.”

The Taliban said Monday that it was “not responsible for the deaths” of the cartoonists if they did not act. Taliban spokesman Abdul Moneim al-Khatib said that many of his troops are still there in Afghanistan in the hope of avenging those responsible.

The Pakistani government has denied any responsibility for the cartoonists.

The Taliban and the mainstream media, though, had long been trying to find a way forward in the face of the government. The Pakistani government had long held onto the belief that it possessed the ability to bring about a political solution through violence. In their opinion, such a solution could only work out if its participants were part of an elite terrorist group. To make that happen, the Pakistani rulers had to find some way forward.

The government and the conservative media are now trying to work together to make that happen. It remains to be seen how the government would take up this new plan.

The Islamic Cultural Society should continue to work for its future

The Taliban has a history of claiming in the past that the Pakistani government has the ability to stop and consider its enemies. In September 2005, the Taliban stated in an interview that it would help the Pakistani government deal with Taliban violence. It continued to say that

The previous example provided depicted the worst outcomes of misunderstanding or misrepresentation of religion, but the offenses can be minor as well. In the Hindu religion many Indians do not eat meat, specifically beef because of their religious limitations, as in some Islamic religions they do not eat pork. Understanding each person’s religion is a very important aspect in being respectful and courteous.

Gender can also play a large role in the workplace. With the laws of affirmative actions there are not occupations anymore that are specified towards one gender. Women are driving trucks now, and men are just as effective nurses and secretaries as women. Studies have shown for a long time that men are more apt to understand academics that deal with science and math, and women more apt to excel in academics such as English and Communication. These stereotypes have been proven wrong and many
