In school, you learn about how humans, at least in developed countries, are very wasteful with their resources, especially water. We don’t have that much freshwater on Earth, only about 2.5% of water on Earth is freshwater and of that only 1% of the freshwater is available to us because most of it is trapped in glaciers. When I learned how wasteful we are with the small of freshwater that’s available to us, I wanted to try to conserve water because every little bit helps. I went online and did some research and most of the websites were saying to just use less water in my everyday life. Then, I heard this article on NPR it change my whole perspective on this issue.

About a year ago, I was listening to NPR and I heard this really interesting article. The article was about a study that found out the best way to conserve water. Most people think that taking cold or short showers or turning off the sink when you’re brushing your teeth are some of the best ways to conserve water. This study found out that those actions don’t conserve as much water as we think. The study concluded that buying water-efficient showerheads, toilets, and sinks save much more water. Even though they are expensive to buy, in the long run, you save much more money because you spend less on your utility bill and you’re saving so much water in the process. This news was shocking to me.

The next day I told my dad about what I heard on NPR and I told him we should buy water-efficient showerheads, toilets, and sinks for our whole house. I knew that they were expensive, and I told him that, but I thought that we could buy all these appliances over a long time period so we wouldn’t spend so much at once. He agreed with what I proposed and about 2 months later he bought one water-efficient showerhead. It was fairly easy to put it in. And it worked the same as a normal showerhead, but it
