Too Much Stress??
Unfortunately, if you want to do well at VCE, some amount of stress is unavoidable. VCE not only tests your ability to learn, understand and remember, it also tests your ability to manage your time and cope with all those pressures. Some people dont stress much, some people tear themselves apart; some people naturally cope well, others need to learn techniques. If (like most of us) you arent one of those lucky people who naturally manage stress well, the good news is that there are heaps of things you can do to minimise stress in the first place, and secondly, help cope with it when it weighs you down.

Preparation is the key. If you feel well prepared before an exam, you will stress less and perform better. If you have prepared well for writing an essay, you will have a clearer focus on what you are writing. However, due to heavy workloads, commitments to part-time jobs, personal problems or a whole range of other things that can come up, sometimes we just cannot be as prepared as we would like. Learning techniques to manage your stress at times like these are really important so that you can feel productive and in control.

Here are some ideas to help you stress less. It is important to remember that everyone copes with things differently and different techniques work for different people. This is by no means an exhaustive list of ways to relieve stress, but it will give you starting place from which you can figure out what works best for you.

1. Take a break. You will work best if your life is balanced, so dont forget your other interests. However, time management is important; theres not much point taking a break if all you are doing is thinking about the schoolwork that you need to get done.

2. Relax. Learning some relaxation techniques is invaluable. You dont have to engage in lengthy relaxation or meditation (although these are brilliant, if you are inclined). I found simply lying down for a while, listening to your favourite music or taking a peaceful walk to be really useful. Anything that helps you take your mind off whatever is causing you stress. With a clearer mind, troubles dont seem so big and they are easier to tackle.

3. Write lists. Note down all of the things you need to get done and set yourself a reward for completing each one. Being able to visualise your progress not only gives you a sense of achievement, it motivates you to do more.

4. Talk to someone. Make sure your family and friends are aware of the pressures you are under, so that they can support you better. Sometimes you have things on your mind that limit your ability to study or get things done, and you need an objective person to talk to. School counsellors are a great resource – use them!

Good luck! Keep in mind that stress-management skills will help you throughout your life, not just during VCE. Learning good
