Which is Better: Insane or Dead?
Insanity is the most unnatural thing a person with a mind can have. To use it and to have lost it is very frustrating to the sane mind. To die is the only super natural thing a living, breathing person can do. There are two characters that know this better than most people. Mrs. Mallard and Darling are two caged birds that are put into this box of oppression, not being able to breath, so they escape the ways they know how. Mrs. Mallard dies and Darling goes crazy. In reading about them, their actions, ending conditions and thirst for liberation were the things that strike me interest the most.
The characters of these stories are powerful characters because their actions are meaningful. There was a reason for everything they did in the midst of their trial. They did things differently; however, this is due to the amount of time they had. Mrs. Mallard has one hour and the Darling had a matter of weeks. They both had a condition of some sort; Mrs. Mallard had heart disease and Darling had a nervous condition. Even though their situations were different, they both had something and someone hindering their lives. The majority of the time they were alone analyzing themselves and their lives in the future. Coming to a realization of what was and what will be had a lot to do with the sudden change of their situations, be it good or bad. Mrs. Mallard cried tears of sadness and happiness. Darling wrote about her problems and the woman in the wall. They definitely handled things in a different ways.
To the sane mind and eyes of a normal person, the worst outcomes for these ladies were their actual conclusion. It seemed to be tragic for the both of them in two totally different situations. Darling figured out that she was the women in the wallpaper. To imagine her creeping out the wallpaper and tearing it out is a strange thought to ponder on. We would say that she went insane; she would say she was liberated. Mrs. Mallard went through two phases of oppression to liberation. First from her husband dying to loving the fact she can live better without
