The interview with Mrs D.B. relieved that she has two major health problems affecting her ability to “live life to the fullest”, as she stated. The first being chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and secondly osteoarthritis. Although she continues to have complete control of her body functions, she voiced concern with the decline of her conditions, and how it may affect her activity tolerance in the near future.
Although Mrs. B wants to continue to be completely independent, she has many health issues that indicate she needs assistance. Her ambulation is well coordinated, but she gets short of breath after walking a distance of fifty feet, that accompanied with the fact that her “arthritic disease affects movement and functional capacity” making it more difficult for her to perform her activities of daily living (Touhy & Jett, 2010, p. 180).
Psychologically and cognitively she is not affected by age related changes, her memory is impeccable. Her score of thirty on the mini mental state examination showed that there were no cognitive impairments. The reminiscing and story telling that we shared was a wonderful experience and she seemed to enjoy it immensely.
Mrs. B informs me that although she has not attended church or congregation regularly since she was twelve years old, she still feels a spiritual fulfillment through reading
