about. This is about the misguided attempts to lower obesity in our society.
Recently a lawyer, Stephen Joseph, took it upon himself to tell the world that drugs,
smoking, and drunk driving are not the biggest threats to our health. He believes
that the next great killer will be.Oreos!
Apperently this man thinks everyone in America is to stuiped to know that
cookies are not healthy. So Stephen went and filed a law suit against Kraft, the
maker of Nabisco products, in the hopes of peranently banning the sale of those
crunchy, creamy goodies to Californians under the age of 21. He started his case
by saying that Oreos “trans fats”, the by-product of turning cooking oils into a room
temperature solid, is bad for you.
Mr. Josephs second claim is that not a lot of people know about the danger
of trans fats. Well after his first claim the National Academy of Sciences Institute of
Medicine thrust trans fats into the public debate with a critical report. The center for
Science in the Public interest responded with renewed demands for trans fat food
labels. Since IOM issued it findings, more than 14,000 news stories have been
written about trans fats, making his claim less than believable.
Mr. Joseph has shown his single minded attempt of banning oreo cookies to
all under the age of 21. What he hasnt show is caring to those who love these little
