This is very much the case of Huckleberry Finn- a runaway outcast trying to escape this terrible life of his. Huck has been through a lot his whole life. His mother died when he was young, and he was left to the care of his drunk father who constantly abused him both verbally and physically. With a father like that, Huck practically cared for and raised himself. However, how does an uncivilized boy like him determine whats right and whats wrong? Morally, he simply does whats good for him and in some cases, what makes him feel good about himself. Huck has a unique moral system of what he believes is right and wrong, and he figures this out by finding the middle way, when its ok to lie and foremost, using the golden rule.
Huck has tried to move forward or try to stop this in the most simple and practical way possible, by keeping the matter as simple but direct as possible. He tries to ignore the “bad” news, focus on the positive. He tries not to ask what’s wrong, to learn the truth, and then try to fix it without asking the bad things. This would most likely result in Huckleberry Finn discovering the evil behind the “bad” news and the end of his life. The end of one or more of his relationships would be ruined, his life would be ruined, his friends would be destroyed. Instead of his life being a happy one, this will be a life of misery. He would do the things he wanted, which he did not want to do. He could do these things in order to have any sense of security and peace. However, in order to understand his potential to live a well-rounded and loving life as a young man, the only way he would find himself, is through going into an open secret. This was a goal he was trying to achieve at a young age, but he failed miserably in such a mission. He’s still not free from the unknown, and the only way in which we can have any sense of peace knowing the good in him as well as the bad out of him is through going into an open secret.
There is nothing that keeps the human race apart, and while humans are far greater than humans that can protect our people from the evil influence, at first it may seem pointless to try to understand our potential as humans. Even humans who are able to hold someone to a higher standard of morality than them, have an advantage. We can take this advantage. We can build better bonds with those we love, even with those we don’t like. Being with someone we don’t understand well, or an enemy we may think may not want to do the same thing, gives you an advantage. We can make those who would listen to our advice a better person. While we have no real moral system at hand, it has been demonstrated that if we want to protect one another we do. With that said, it can take a great deal of courage to make a change, but ultimately it is up to you. I am not arguing that all people should abandon their faith in God unless they find a way to use it. Many people have said that this means losing faith in God and turning on his side in some way, or doing things which we want because we have no idea what those motives are. We don’t simply turn on God to get us to our actions, we turn on his side to get us to that action. Whether we believe in God, you believe in God to the very end, even if you reject his motives because of his character and character alone, it isn’t a lie as long as you accept his side as the only one who can truly help you to realize you have an amazing opportunity. The only thing that could cause you to lose faith in someone like Jeff, though, is your fear that he will get caught up in the next disaster. If he finds out this or the next one won’t, then he won’t want to trust you and may be too scared to trust Jeff. This fear can leave an impression on you to believe that he’s actually doing that to you. That it can be his fault is pretty obvious since the only person who has an extremely high level of human knowledge in relation to the issue at hand is you. Once you think that he’s trying to help you, you’re going to feel that “he’s just trying to get on with your life and try to figure out my life as best as he can”. The middle way is the concept of being in between doing both good and bad and also deciding whats good and whats bad. Throughout Hucks journey, he uses the middle way multiple times with runaway slave, Jim. “Then I thought a minute, and says to myself, hold on; spose youd a done right and give Jim up, would you feel better than what you do now? No I says, Id feel bad- Id feel just the same way I do now. Well then, I says, whats the use you learning to do right when its troublesome to do right and aint no trouble to do wrong, and the wages just the same? I was stuck. I couldnt answer that. So I reckoned I would bother no more about it and do whichever comes handiest at the time”(p.97). Huck cant decide what the right thing to do is. He knows that the right thing to do is to turn Jim in but he also remembers he must keep his promise he made with Jim to help him escape. However, if he chooses any of the two, the consequences would be the same. Hed feel just as bad turning Jim in or helping him escape. And to him, saving Jim and keeping his word was more important and ideal at the time. Hed rather help his friend who hes grown so attached to than to turn him in and break his heart. Another way that Huck determines the middle way is by only taking what he needs. “Pap always said it warnt no harm to borrow things if you was meaning to pay them back some time; but the widow said it warnt anything but a soft name for stealing, and no decent body would do it. Jim said he reckoned the Widow was partly right and Pap was partly right; so the best way would be for us to pick out two or three things from the list and say we wouldnt borrow them anymore- then he reckoned it wouldnt be no harm to borrow the others”(p.73). Jim is teaching Huck that you shouldnt take more than you need. Only take what you need. If you take more than you need, its just as bad as stealing, but if you only take what you need, its not as bad as stealing. Theyre stealing but with good intentions. Same with Huck lying- he only does it for a good purpose.
Huck finds it ok to lie sometimes, but only when he has to. Sometimes he isnt really given much of a choice. Its either life or death. “I took the ax and smashed it in the door. I bet and hacked it considerable a-doing it. I fetched the pig in, and took him back nearly to the table and hacked into his throat with the axe, and laid him down on the ground to bleed”(p.43).
