Capital Metro light rail system                                Word count:  866The Australian government has planned a metro light rail system project for Canberra. There always will be advocates and opponents fuelling the continuing debate of this project (Hensher, David A, Waters II, William G, 1994). People have different thoughts about this project which brings up our topic on the true intentions of the government. Lawson (2015) stated that fifty-five per cent of people support the project, thirty-four per cent disagreed and the rest are unsure. Supporters of the project think Capital Metro aims to improve public transportation, reduce vehicle operation costs, bring environmental benefits and encourage healthier lifestyles. There are so many benefits that could propel Canberra to be one of busiest and fastest growing cities in Australia (ACT Government 2015). On other hand, opponent’s opined that the true intention in approving the project is the subsequent result of higher values for land along the corridor which will lead to increasing land tax revenue for the government. In order to distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of metro light rail system, this essay will analyse the viewpoints from both sides.Due to the low density of population, Canberrans rely highly on private cars as the most convenient means of travel. The heavy usage of cars in Canberra has resulted in several negative impacts including traffic jams, higher level of air pollution and longer travel time during peak hours. This is evident along Northbourne Avenue in the central business district with very bad traffic jams during peak hours. The current situation might worsen in the future as more people move to the capital seeking opportunities. Nevertheless, not everyone can afford driving especially students and youths living on minimum wage. The lack of an efficient public transport system potentially limits their access to universities, social events, workplace, shops and other activities. The problems outlined above presents a strong case to have the metro light rail system in Canberra.Corbell noted that the Capital Metro presents huge opportunities to change and shape the nation’s capital city (ACT Government, 2015). Light rail system can satisfy the increasing demand of passengers while reduce their dependency on cars. The Australian government has conducted some researches and concluded the best option is building the metro light rail system. Light rail system was recommended with benefits such as ease of access, reduced traffic congestion, less air pollution, and sustainable (Kuby, Barranda, Upchurch, 2004, pp. 223–247). One of most vital benefits is similar travelling time during peak and off peak hours. People may not need to worry that they are going to be late for work during peak hours by taking the Capital Metro. Light rail system timetables are also more punctual and reliable.
