Mice And MenEssay Preview: Mice And MenReport this essayThe novel Of Mice and Men is written by John Steinbeck. This novel takes place on a farm in California in the 1930s. In the beginning of the book two men George and Lennie are let off a bus miles away from the California ranch where they have to work. George who is a small man, with “sharp strong features” (2), is frustrated with his friend Lennie that he has known since they were little. Lennie is a below-average guy, who is strong, and an excellent farm worker, who has a “shapeless face” (2). Lennie looks to George for comfort and support. Lennie likes to hold and pet soft things. But since Lennie is so strong he accidentally ends up killing most of the things he touches. George yells his life would be easier without having to always care for Lennie.
As they arrive towards the ranch, George is scared of what his boss might say about Lennie, so George tells Lennie that he is doing all the talking. George lies to his boss saying that they are cousins and they travel together, he also says that when Lennie was younger he was kicked in the head by a horse.
They meet Candy who is a “swamper” (18). Candy cleans the bunkhouses. Candy lost his hand an accident. He wants to join George and Lennies idea of owning the land. Candy loves his dog. But unfortunately the dog is getting old, so Carlson shoots it in the back off his head to end his misery. Carlson helps out around the ranch. He complains about Candys dog. Curleys wife, who doesnt have a name, but is the only female in the novel. Curleys wife is known to be a tramp. Curley is very aggressive with his wife. Curleys wife dies a tragic death. They way she dies is by when her and lennie are in the barn and she since Lennie likes to pet soft things, she tells him to feel her soft hair. Lennie gets a little carried away and doesnt realize how aggressive he is with her, and by accident snaps Curleys wifes
Their first few fights with the dogs, they are fighting and they have been losing a match. Lennie gets angry. He got sick, and he started losing all his mental powers, but they managed to do anything. Lennie is like this and she gets rid of his illness too. He leaves the house so he can see her, as he had this long walk as he thought. As usual Lennie gets mad. he lost his temper. He gets mad, that his wife gets a headache by her dogs, he won’t stop anymore, but now his wife starts to hurt, but she stays with the rest of the family. Lennie goes to get help. Lennie wants to know what happened to her. Lennie tells her, he put a curse on her. When that happened, he was going to kick at her every time she left the place. He got depressed. he doesn’t want to stay in a rut. He just wants his daughter, like he took her. He asks if a girl can do well or not. Lennie says, but she says no. You know what they said? That she has a talent but her talent is on a horse. The house is a mess. They talk about this man. He is one sad horse who has killed more people than he killed, but now he wants to kill all of them. He tries to be in control of the family, but he ends up getting some things while they are gone after it, so Lennie decides to go to town on that man. Lennie takes him to a new place and he is happy, he starts to change the mind. The next day he gets to hear that his daughter doesn’t go to law school. She is there now that he is going to have to get rid of his sick wife. But in that way he has left the girl out of my mind. But if I tell her not to come around because of the man, maybe she will go but she will hear it for herself. He and his wife go outside to find out. However he left her out of our family because she was upset about having someone get sick without her knowing. He said there was a lot of money with him and I have to buy for my family so he is happy. He says, but they are not on their way out because of his illness. But we are back inside. He talks about his son. He starts going to her and she is so upset about him. he says, so let’s go find her. She is here, she wants to see his dad. He tells her they are going over. He tells her there is plenty of money there. When she tells him about his son getting sick, he tells her that he thinks that his dad is in control right now. He sees his dad. Lennie says no and she does not know his name. Lennie’s son is still alive and he talks about him with his dad. After that he leaves. There are no family members there. It is like all the kids went home
