Reporting a Fire at Lets Play Nursery
Reporting a fire at Lets Play NurseryThere is a fire at Lets Play Nursery in the heating control room. There are 20 children trapped inside and 5 members of staff. There are 2 levels of the nursery and 2 exits. Three of the children have asthma. One of the staff members has collapsed in shock and has banged her head on a nearby table. She is unconscious and bleeding. Responses:In this case study the practitioners should take immediate action towards the staff member that is unconscious. One of the practitioners should be supervising the unconscious staff member and the other practitioners should be controlling the situation and looking after the kids. The staff member that is supervising the unconscious practitioner should make sure they are respecting their dignity and modesty. For example if the practitioners top has lifted up while falling on to the ground the practitioner needs to make sure they find a blanket to cover up the unconscious practitioner’s body. Moreover, the practitioner that is supervising the unconscious practitioner should make sure that they are in recovery position if they are not leaning on any table as this can cause further damage. The recovery position is when the person is put on their side and one hand under the cheek. This is important because if the person vomits they would not choke or swallow their tongue. This can lead to death.  Also if during the fall the practitioner has cut themselves, then the other practitioner needs to make sure they use first aid to clean up the wound to avoid any spreading of bacterial infection. The practitioners that are looking after the children as well as the children who have asthma need to make sure they are safe. Also they need to make sure if any child has an asthma attack, it is noted down and dealt with. For example if one of the children has an asthma attack due to the smoke in the nursery, the practitioner needs to act fast and help the child to breathe and get the child’s inhaler as well as report the incident. In addition to that, because of the fire the practitioners including the children can be affected emotionally. The practitioners should access support for their own emotions as well as the children. This is because the children and practitioners might be in shock due to the fire as well as the accident with the practitioner who had fell over and become unconscious. It is also important that the practitioners that are looking after the children remain calm as this will keep them calm to and avoid them from getting scared and panicking in the situation. It is also important that the practitioners keep communicating with the children so that they remain calm, and the situation can be dealt with.  Priorities:There are many priorities in this case study. For example, the main priorities of the practitioner in this situation is to remain calm and make sure a staff member is supervising the children in order to keep them safe and calm. This is a priority for the practitioners because if they did not remain calm and panicked in the situation the children will get worried. Another priority the practitioners have is that they need to make sure everyone in the room is safe. For example if the fire is by the door and there is a window on the door the practitioners need to make sure the children are away from the door as well as themselves. This is because the fire can make the window hot enough to blow up into flames and onto someone. In addition to that, it is also important for the practitioners to find out what caused the fire. This is important because the managers would then consider improvements to be made to avoid any further accidents and damage in the future as well as everyone’s safety in the nursery.
