Lyric analysis
Nothing man by Bruce Springsteen
In this song Bruce talks about being a man who had lost a family member in the 9/11 attacks. These lyrics could also be interpreted as a man who was a firefighter or police officer that helped out after these attacks.

He talks about how you can buy him a drink or shake his hand but he will still be the “nothing man”. He will still not have his family back. He says “say you understand” as in saying please understand that the pain he is suffering is unimaginable.

9/11 entry.
On September 11 of 2001 I was sitting in Mrs. Kistners 2nd period history class when Mr. Somers comes in and says a plane had just flown into the twin tower. At first we all laughed like what kind of idiot would fly a plain into a building, but we soon learned that this was a planned terror attack. Everyone went nuts, nobody knew what was going on, people started getting picked up by their parents and everyone was calling anybody they knew that they thought could have been in the area at the time. I remember the bridges and tunnels were closed off so nobody could get in or out of the city. I was very calm because I was young and I didnt understand the severity of what had just happened, I had no idea how huge of a deal this was. It was after all the most violent act of war to ever be on American soil. Even now I think back and I remember it so clearly. Matt Gifford and I walking through the halls the whole day going into whatever classroom was open with a TV in it.
